TBH I'd much rather be gay looking than a straight looking slob.
I'm pretty sure he means the latter and I understand where he's coming from. Personally I prefer masculine guys over effeminate guys. After all, if I wanted to be with someone feminine, I'd be with a woman.
Also, not all straight/straight-looking men are slobs. And not all gay men are well groomed either. I know a gay guy who is very effeminate and he is one of the most poorly groomed people I've ever seen.
