Stupid Lexmark system requirements

Had a customer come in today who was having problems installing their new X2650 all-in-one. The problem they said they were getting is that when they tried to run the installer, a message came up saying they had 445 MB of RAM and the required amount of RAM to install is 512. And they said it wouldn't let them continue. I thought that can't be right so booted it up and tried it myself, and indeed it would not let me install the software and drivers because the computer had 445 MB instead of 512. You would think it would at least let you "Continue anyway" or something!

I contacted Lexmark support through live chat and told them this. It's quite common for budget laptops/desktops to use shared graphics which take memory from the main system memory. He went through a load of questions like have you got enough hard drive space (Yes, there is 45 GB free) and finally he pointed me towards the installer configuration file which had a section for system requirements. He told me to change the processor value and try that... obviously that wouldn't work so I suggested how about changing the hex for memory requirement from 0200 to 0190, he said it probably won't work but I can try. I tried it and, yep, it worked.

Now how stupid is all that just to install a printer. Why an earth would they not allow you to continue install if your computer doesn't meet the requirements? It's on Vista FFS, surely if the computer can handle Vista it can handle a bloody printer!

it is fucking stupid to have higher requirements on the installer than the printer needs for running :)

Welcome to the stupidity of reality. Apply to the department of common sense for a stupidity ruling against the reality you have discovered!

HP installs about 500MB of useless software, next to the printer/scanner driver which would be about 2MB.

However, the last time I had a HP you could chose to only install the driver.

This is the same stupidity that hardware companies use when they won't allow you to download software without registering the serial number of your hardware. Like you'd download the software if you didn't own the hardware...?

Personally, I wouldn't own a Lexmark if you paid me - cheap printers, but crazy-expensive consumables.

I've only had one prob with Lexmark which worked out fine. I had the one before x2250 ( I can't remember the name of it) But I had a problem reinstalling it and called Tech support and they determined it had a problem and upgraded me to the x2250. I called them on Sun afternoon and by Mon morning I had the new x2250.
About 4 months ago I decided to get a new one for a family reunion printouts and got the X3550 which works perfectly for me.
I guess they work differently for each of us.

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the printer. I expect it will be fine for them now it's installed. it's just the stupidity of putting a system requirement of 512MB of RAM just to install it. I can't see the reason for them to do this, a warning maybe but not a requirement. If a computer can run Vista then I think it can run a printer. Oh the support guy also said just before I suggested changing memory value that the only thing I can do is upgrade the memory!

Ahh well it earned us £20 I suppose.

Have you seen the latest incarnation of the jetdirect/admin software?

If fucking installs a mssql server and all.

Talk about bloatware.

Yes, there is a minimal installation, but that one leaves out the drivers of the card reader on my all-in-one thing... if I want everything to work, I have to go with the full installation that also installs a CD label maker software and other useless tools.

I installed a network printer at work yesterday. My Mac was printing on it within less than a minute. My colleague with XP took about 45 minutes after having to uninstall, reinstall, restart, BSOD etc. The language was not pretty from that end of the room. When it was finally done and the first page came out the margins were all wrong!

Let me connect my all-in-one thing to your Mac, I'm sure it won't work right out of the box or the settings will be wrong too.
