Had a customer come in today who was having problems installing their new X2650 all-in-one. The problem they said they were getting is that when they tried to run the installer, a message came up saying they had 445 MB of RAM and the required amount of RAM to install is 512. And they said it wouldn't let them continue. I thought that can't be right so booted it up and tried it myself, and indeed it would not let me install the software and drivers because the computer had 445 MB instead of 512. You would think it would at least let you "Continue anyway" or something!
I contacted Lexmark support through live chat and told them this. It's quite common for budget laptops/desktops to use shared graphics which take memory from the main system memory. He went through a load of questions like have you got enough hard drive space (Yes, there is 45 GB free) and finally he pointed me towards the installer configuration file which had a section for system requirements. He told me to change the processor value and try that... obviously that wouldn't work so I suggested how about changing the hex for memory requirement from 0200 to 0190, he said it probably won't work but I can try. I tried it and, yep, it worked.
Now how stupid is all that just to install a printer. Why an earth would they not allow you to continue install if your computer doesn't meet the requirements? It's on Vista FFS, surely if the computer can handle Vista it can handle a bloody printer!
