Sugar: The Bitter Truth

Just started watching, sounds very interesting and like it may change my opinions on certain things. Will report back once the entire 1.5hr lecture is over.

Aymotin... THANK YOU.

Honestly, despite studying a lot in Chemistry and Biology I never reached the stage to learn about these bio-chemical reactions.

Without seeing those bio-chemical reactions of glucose and sucrose I would have called this guy a quack, especially in relation to the calories in vs. calories out assumption.

Overall I took 6 pages of notes and have bookmarked that video because it is fantastic, it was just what I was looking for in all of the pubmed articles in relation to mitochondria and our diet.

This is definitely something I will be summarizing and explaining to friends and family when they ask me for help with weight loss and diet now.

I have always been an advocate that fructose is ok in natural sources, and got quite annoyed at this video and my assumptions until right at the end where he explains it, how the fructose is packaged with fibre, fibre is the key there.

What were your impressions of it?

I started watching it with some "Yeah now he will explaint hat sugar is bad....duuuh"-attitude, but that changed quickly.

The most intresting part for me was where he explained that calories are not just calories and that sugar is not usable by the body until it bypassed the liver, where it reacts just like alcohol. Also how it disrupts the body mechanics of "I had enough".

It changed my view on food and will influence me widely, thats for sure.

I am just starting to get my food-habits back in line and orient myself on the paleo-idea. Since I quit on fluor-products and sugar and eat mostly fish, meat and vegetables I feel way better. It´s quite amazing.

Glad you liked the video, spread it ;)

^ one of my relatives is actually a geneticist working on mitochondria and obesity so I will flick them the vid and ask if it is actually true or just skewed BS.

Just remember at the end though that fructose/sucrose is fine when it is with fibre. So in its natual state of fruit.

I mostly eat veggies. I get a decent amount of meat too since I am working out. Just remember that fat is good for you as well, as long as you keep;

Omega 3 fats in a similar ratio to omega 6.
Monounsaturated fats are decent so eat up
Saturated fats are unavoidable but important to reduce
transfats are evil lol.

Biggest things I ever did to improve my health in the past was
1. No soda drinks or sugary drinks
2. No candy, chocolate, cakes etc.

Lost so much weight just from that.

Yes of course. By cutting sugar I mean added sugar in products or sugar in my food. Right now I am drinking milk with a banana mixed into it, I wouldn´t abandon fruits.

Does this video mention negative calories? If yes .. waste of time. If no, I might watch it :)

Nope, not if I recall correctly.
It is definitely not a waste of time. The lecturer goes into great detail about the human body and how different kinds of sugar and forms of sugar intake influence the metabolism, the hormonal balance and the eventual outcome. The impressive thing about the lecture is that he doesn't just state his findings as facts but explains them in a extremely detailed fashion.

Best video on nutrition I've ever seen.

Indeed. Not only is he showing intresting and surprising facts about nutrition, he also explains it in a way that is most understandable and attention-grabbing.

Definitiv sehenswert Corny ;)

inredibly interesting and it makes me realize what's wrong with my father acidic problem : too much fructose. We use to drink orange juice daily, but fresh from the fruit with plentyof fiber in it. With old age my parents buy juice pre made with high fructose and no fiber..bingo weight gain, hypertention and "goute" :(

very interesting, it will change my view on fructose and glucose. thank you for the link !

That video literally blew my mind some hours ago when I watched it. I knew High Fructose Corn Syrup was bad but this bad? Nope. I'm not entirely shocked though because I am overweight with type 2 diabetes and although I pig out from time to time, it's mainly the juices that I drink. Thanks to Robert Lustig I'm gonna look up the Paleolithic Diet a little later and if it's not too treacherous I will try it. I seriously would try something for 10 days to be on one less pill! :)

Is it in print any where? I don't have the patience to watch long speeches.

As I've always said it's about moderation. HFCS is a definite no no. If you're going to eat products with sugar, make sure it is cane sugar. I'm not saying find a cane sugar field and start chewing and chomping down on sugarcane... but, moderation is key.

That's how I feel also.

This video makes complete sense! Good find. Thanks for posting.

I watched the recent 60 Minutes interview segment of this guy Dr. Robert Lustig of the University of California and was blown away. The cancer connection on how tumors are intercepting sugar in the blood stream as fuel for growth was an eye opener. So many detrimental effects both short and long term.
