Suggest a good gay novel

Yeah, Angels in America is great. And in the HBO special they all play multiple parts. It's basically just the main cast rotating around the speaking parts, and extras. Emma Thompson likewise plays the Angel and a nurse (and all of them play plainclothes "angels" or otherworldly delegates in another scene).

"First You Fall" by Scott Sherman is one of my favorite reads.

NYC-area hustler Kevin Connor goes to meet one of his clients, who ends up dead, having fallen out the window of his highrise apartment.

The NYPD officer in charge of investigating the man's death turns out to be Kevin's high school boyfriend. The officer rules Kevin's client's death a suicide, but Kevin isn't so sure.

There are 2 very well-executed subplots - 1) the police officer and Kevin have a fling, but do they get back together? And 2)Kevin's parents have an argument, resulting in his mom showing up at his doorstep wanting to move in indefinitely, and it falls to Kevin to patch his parents'marriage up, so his mom can move out of his place. While she stays with him, it also falls to Kevin to keep his job as a male prostitute a secret, since he and his mom are now, basically roommates.

A great gay-themed murder mystery that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's even laugh out loud funny in some parts. I also love the fact that the whole book, from cover to cover, is told entirely in first-person, from Kevin's perspective.

Highly recommended.

Late last year I re-read Peter Cameron's The Weekend, a short novel (1994) tackling that familiar theme: taking your new boyfriend home to meet your family for the first time. Enjoyable, but I wouldn't call this a comedy, or if you are looking for light entertainment.

"First You Fall" by Scott Sherman is one of my favorite reads...

I loved it! It's similar to Greg Herren's Scotty Bradley series.

I forgot to mention another worthwhile mystery series in my other post -- R.D. Zimmerman's Todd Mills books.

I should mention that I didn't love everything about First You Fall -- there's a non-trivial problem with the portrayal of one female character, plus a few minor issues.

I have to admit I've really gotten into gay romance novels because I'm a romantic at heart! I recommend Double Full and Full Disclosure by Kindle Alexander :)

This thread also reminded me that I downloaded a collection of 50 gay novels considered the best by the person who uploaded them - they are in .mobi, but happy to send them over to someone if they want them or just a list of them (someone of them I don't agree with, but on the whole its fine. Everything spoken about so is in the folder).

Just curious...what's a .mobi file? Am I right in guessing its something that can only be read on a cell-phone?

Might have to check those out since I'm kinda romantic at heart too...

I recently read A Density Of Souls by Christopher Rice 9780786886463

The only other 'gay' books I've read aren't novels, but collections of short stories.
Best Gay Romance 2008 . 9781573443036
Best Gay Romance 2009 . 9781573443364
Best Gay Romance 2010 . 9781573443777
Fool For Love . 9781573443395
Surfer Boys - Gay Erotic Stories . 9781573443494

I also recommend checking out the 'stories' section here on Jub for anyone who hasn't done so

InCREDDDibly cheesy and ridiculous.

But also sublime as it was the first "gay novel" I ever read...

Helmet of Flesh,
by Scott Symons

It was a loaner from the local Gay and Lesbian community centre library. And I'm sure I read it twice before I took it back.

I have all but the Surfer one, and they're good. The "Best" series is usually edited by Richard Labonte, and you can't go wrong with his collections or anything else from Cleis Press. Other editors have taken over for Labonte in the last few years. The various erotica collections by Labonte tend to have good plots and good writing, not just wanking material. Some of the editors of unrelated erotica collections lean a bit more to the wanking side.

I believe the 3 I have are all Richard Labonte. Sometime I need to get on eBay & see if I can find any more of that 'best gay romance' series :)
Surfer boys had a different editor, but is still Cleis Press.

Even though I read it like 15 years ago, The Folding Star by Alan Hollinghurst is a tremendous gay novel. A teacher in his 30's becomes obsessed with a 17 year old student. Some have called this the gay Lolita, but it's actually better than Lolita as Hollinghurst is an outstanding writer who tells an amazing story here.
