Summertime means Fresh Fruits

I love cantaloupe - but it has been years since I have had one with flavor because they are picked so early and not allowed to ripen on the vine.

OMG Yes!

I haven't had a good cantaloupe in years. As a kid, I only saw cantaloupe in the summer, now I realize that seasonal fruits were still seasonal across most of the country up until the 1980's.

Love mangoes when someone else cuts them for me. There must be an easier way.
I don't mind peeling mangoes. I've gotten pretty good at it. Plus it's fun to scrape off the flesh from the inside of the peel with your teeth.

Tell you what: I'll peel your mangoes if you come over and debone my half-chicken.

I'm thinking I might try to find a decent cantaloupe this summer... I'm thinking of checking a farmers' market in my area. I have a feeling it might be $$$$--one reason I don't shop that market regularly is that every time I wander through, it's $$$$$.

It's too bad that produce market I once shopped at is closed. I have a feeling they might have had access to good melons. They certainly did with other fruit, having good relationships with farmers.

Another thing I might do "someday" is try to grow a cantaloupe. That way, I could make sure the melon was vine ripe before yanking it off the vine.

I've tried those, but never had any luck. Same with watermelon.
Climate here just isn't right for such fruits.

I have been enjoying the mangos from my backyard tree. It produces a good crop every year for about a two-month period in May and June, and usually wraps it up by about the first week of July.

I love fresh fruits all year round, but specially in summer.
Cherries and apricots are perfect now. Yesterday I bought the first peaches but I'm keeping them a few days before eating. Today we ate the first watermelon, it was delicious.
I go to the market every week, for me it's part of the Mediterranean lifestyle. But even here, in this country traditionally devoted to farming, some people are clueless about seasonal foods. They will buy anything in the supermarket, any day of the year, then complain about bad quality. I pity those people so much.

I've had my first few little tomatoes from the garden. Still be awhile before things really get going. Might pick some kale or chard this weekend.
Plums/peaches/pears if any make it will be late summer or fall before they're ready.

I'd either half forgotten or didn't fully realize that cantaloupe might be picky where it grows...

I did some research, and it sounds like it wouldn't do well for me., But apparently there are tricks that can help (choosing variety carefully, doing something so the soil is warm enough, etc).

I'm envious. The best I can do means cherry or grape tomatoes in September. But I do a poor job of getting the plants in a timely fashion these days. And my specific location is pretty flawed.

I have had fantasies of "someday" having a better location and getting a cherry tomato plant going ASAP.

I start seeds back in march to give plants a head-start, since the growing season here isn't really long enough. At this point I'm just getting an occasional grape or cherry tomato... won't really be til Aug/Sep before I start getting any true harvest, or the larger varieties.
My garden space isn't in the ideal spot (corner of the yard that is shaded part of the day), plus the soil here in my part of CO is crap... but atleast its ok to grow some stuff. :)

The neighborhood lost our Safeway grocery with the best fresh produce I've seen in the Seattle area. Whole Foods is quite a drive away and PCC is pricey!

Summer is definitely Cherry season in Washington State.
Bing cherries are dark red while Rainier cherries are bright yellow/red.

I went grocery shopping for the first time this month, and several must-buys were sales on some summer fruit. Including blueberrries, which I'd gotten just the a day before, but the sale was too good. I'm sure I won't have any problem using up the blueberries.
