Is there any risk in catching HIV or other STDs from sunbeds (assuming that no one has been naughty inside them and left a suprise!)

I'm right in thinking that virus is not present in sweat or skin flakes etc?

Sorry for the over paranoid question...!oops!

Hey,

Sunbeds should be cleaned after each use, however, it is not generally possible to contract STD's or HIV from sunbeds, always clean before your own use even if the person before you has cleaned it, that way at least you know that you are lying on a clean surface.

When I go tanning (haven't for awhile) they always clean the beds after the person is done.

If I tanned regularly I think I would bring a pack of the disinfeting wipes with me. Just in case, you can't depend on the quality of cleaning that the employee has done.

There's no risk at all with sunbeds. The only thing I could think of would probably be some skin disease or whatever if the preivous guy did have some skin problems. Minimal chances though, anyway, you should do a bit of reading on STD/HIV and I thought this thread might be just what you need

Get the facts right and don't fret! :)

Yeah, I will always wipe the bed down with whatever spray the place
has there before I lie down. But I do prefer the stand up tanners much more now.

You won't get STDs off a sunbed. You will get UV aging to your skin and an increased risk of melanoma from them- the same as exessive exposure to the real sun!

Thanks for bringing this up. There is no such thing as a "safe" tan. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying, probably to entice you into spending your hard earned cash to willingly be bombarded with cancer-causing ultraviolet rays.

My father is a retired dermatologist. Believe me...you'd much rather have crabs than basal cell carcinoma.

Go for the sprayon tan and wear sunblock...especially if you're of Northern European/Celtic descent. You'll thank me profusely when you're 65 or so!

;)

i don't get the point. why not go lay out in the sun?

Unfortunately, not all of us live in places that get a whole lot of sun. In Seattle, we usually get only about 60 sunny days a year and almost all of them are in the summer. Tanning beds are used, but there are a lot of pale people here. Personally, I don't mind so much, because at least we're mostly all being pale together.
