Support the Matthew Shepard Act

Dear friend,
Support Equality

Every morning, someone you know takes the long way to class. Someone you care about looks over his shoulder on the street. Someone you love fears for her safety.

All because some people hate them for being who they were born to be -- gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

I still remember standing on the steps of the Capitol on October 14th, 1998 - thousands gathered on a cool autumn evening - to remember Matthew Shepard two days after he had been killed in Laramie, Wyoming.

[FONT=arial, helvetica, sans-serif]That night I said that "Matthew Shepard is not the exception to the rule - his tragic death is the extreme example of what happens on a daily basis in our schools, on our streets, and in our communities. And that's why we have an obligation to pass laws that make clear our determination to root out this hatred. We hear a lot from Congress today about how we are a country of laws, not men. Let them make good on those words, and pass hate crimes legislation."

Almost ten years have passed since that candlelight vigil - ten years too long for Washington to do what was so obviously needed.

Today we're closer than ever to passing a federal hate crimes law that includes sexual orientation and gender identity - the Matthew Shepard Act. I've supported this effort from the start because it's the right thing to do.

But we're not there yet. We haven't yet, as we committed to do that night, insured that "the lesson of Matthew Shepard is not forgotten." Right now, my colleagues in the Senate are being barraged with calls and emails from anti-gay groups. It's horrifying that the right wing would pick this of all issues to be against - but it's happening.

Urge your Senators to vote YES on the Matthew Shepard Act.

Think about this: Some members of the House reported receiving five times as many messages opposing this bill as supporting it. Those of us who support the bill need to work to make sure that that in the Senate it's our voices that speak the loudest.

Fight hate crimes-send a message to your senators today.

Senators are feeling the heat. You can be the voice of the 68% of Americans that support this bill. Tell your Senators that you stand up for freedom from fear for all Americans, and you hope they do, too.

Take action today!

what was so special about matthew shepard?
i think its awful what happened to him and it should never happen, but why is he famous for it when it has happened to so many other people that probably dont even get their name in the paper.

Whats so special about him is that some very smart person decided enough was enough.

And I am very glad they did. Hate crimes have been going on way too long and I am glad there are people out there trying to make sure it stops happening.

Thanks for this thread! I'll be sure to pass it along!

We already have hate crime legislaion that includes sexual orientation, Gay's. Lesbians, transgendered and bisexuals are equal citizens under the blanket of the law in all aspects of the law. I lived in the states for almost two years, sorry, USA is not the free country they think they are.

Probably because of the case, publicity and the fact it was quite the turn around and heads up for people in America.

How old are you? Maybe that has something to do with you not getting it.
(Before your time, never heard about it until recently, is what I mean.)

no i heard about this along time ago. an what am i not getting? i undestand everything that has happened. everyone does they play the movie about him at most public schools these days i believe. The only thing i really dont get is what makes him more important then other people this has happened to.

thanks metta. The Matt Shepard story still cuts really deep, and I'm sure I'm not alone. I'll pass it along.

Look, we have to start somewhere. Stop wondering about why his is more important and start making things happen so all crimes CEASE TO EXIST :-)

i supposed. its just whenever something is so publicized about one person i always just wonder why the thousands or more other people dont get the same attention.

For someone who claims to understand everything that happened, you really seem to be having a problem understanding why it's so high profile.

i do understand everything and its not that i dont understand why his is so high profile. its that i dont get why no one else's same exact experience was as high profile. Matthew Shepard was not the first or last person murdered because of being gay.

Well, actually his mother after he was murdered became a very strong and outspoken advocate and activist, that's why.

But for that matter, it's the same reason we uphold Emmett Till, or any other individual as a symbolic icon if someone wanted to adopt the attitude you seem to have.

i am not actually sure who emmitt till is, but i do think that it is wrong for people to be worshipped for doing something many other people did unnoticed. it is like when one kidnapping gets shown in the news all over the nation, but why dont all of the others, what makes the individual situation so special when it is the exact same as others.

and so everyone know i am not trying to lessen what happened to Matthew, i am just really saying that if he is famous for this, why arent other people that had the same situation happen to them.

i just also want to thank u for having the only decent response to what i said

?

right...............way to thread hijack.

Mathew was special for a couple of reasons.

1: The media picked it up huge. Bill Clinton even made a speech about it.

2: The play about his death was very well written, which drew more attention

3: His furneral was protested by Fred Phelps

4: The only places on his face not covered in blood was were he cried. That makes for a fairly poigant human impact.

Well, here's the thing, with all the Veto's recently what's to stop that fuck face of a president you fella's have from Vetoing it? Your president has too much power.
naaa ever since the con. has been drafted, the president has the power to veto, it helps to keep the government equally seperated. if the politicians cared enough, they would try to get a 2/3rds vote and override it, but...yeeeeeah.

Thanks for bringing up this topic. We need to get with it and get this legislation passed.

The death of Matthew Shepard affected me deeply. It could have been me, or any other gay man. The cold brutality of the murder, fueled by hate, caught the attention of many people. In spite of some of the things that have been said, current hate crime laws do not protect gay and transgendered people. It is of the upmost importance that we support the Matthew Shepard Act, and keep pushing it until it passes.

Per the request of cyndi lauper this evening....i'm bumping this up and asking you people that live in the US to send in the email and let your representatives know that you want them to support this very important act.
