The entire intersection just south of where I live is closed in order for the city to replace a tunnel bridge beneath the intersection and over Jackson Creek where it crosses the road diagonally. It was damaged a few years ago during the flood.
There have been notices of its closure for weeks since this street is one of the main north/south corridors of the city which bypasses the downtown core.
This picture looks north. You can see the huge 'Road Closed' and 'Detour' sign and there is another one (circled in red) in the next block beyond:
This next photo looks south to the closed intersection. The creek enters the tunnel at the right corner and exits at the opposite corner to the left. Notice the fence and the warning barrels and barricades:
It's amazing how many cars go around the 'Road Closed' signs and get all the way to the barricades before they realise they can't get through and have to turn around and come right back again.
Construction will continue through to September. It will be interesting to see if people still think the road isn't closed to them a few months from now.
