I hope this year doesn't turn out to be another banner year for celebrity deaths, the way last year was...

I've only seen a few of her films - I always thought she was very beautiful...

Susannah York passed away today, just a week after her 72nd birthday, the BBC is reporting.

York, who received an Oscar nomination for her part in Sydney Pollack's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and also appeared in Tunes of Glory, Tom Jones, A Man for All Seasons and Robert Altman's Images, among dozens of other films. She also played Superman's Kryptonian mother, Lara, in Richard Donner's original Superman: The Movie and two of the subsequent sequels.

In addition to her work on film, York appeared on television, the stage and was a published children's book author in the 1970's.

York is survived by two children and two grandchildren.

Re: Susannah York Dies: Oscar winner TOM JONES, dies at age 72

Indeed, very misleading thread title. But at least Las Vegas will be very pleased to hear that Tom Jones is still very much alive.

Re: Susannah York Dies: Oscar winner TOM JONES, dies at age 72

The title is confusing

And guys, celebrities get old and die, there is nothing new about that...... I mean every year people complain that too many celebrities died that year, which is ridiculous....

We all have to die one day (specially oldish people).

That being said RIP (I remember reading that she was not really a Hollywood diva type).

Re: Susannah York Dies: Oscar winner TOM JONES, dies at age 72

Tom Jones won an Oscar and he died????

Can't believe he won an Oscar!

Re: Susannah York Dies: Oscar winner TOM JONES, dies at age 72

That's a confusing title for this thread. For a second there I thought I was reading that Tom Jones died.
Also, Susannah York did not win an Oscar, but was nominated for one for They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

That's my fault. I copied and pasted the title from the article in the link I posted. Basically the title was supposed to refer to the fact that she was in the Oscar-winner film "Tom Jones." I tried to go back and fix it, but my computer froze up on me and I had to reboot, etc. By the time I managed to get back online and get back here, the time limit to edit anything had passed...

Maybe the mods can fix the thread title...
As for celebrities...sad fact of life that even they die.

Re: Susannah York Dies: Oscar winner TOM JONES, dies at age 72

When I saw the "Title" I was hoping there was another "Tom Jones" and not THE "Tommy Lee Jones".....
The title is misleading...And if anyone can't believe that Tommy Lee Jones won an Oscar then you don't know a THING about REAL acting...

Tommy Lee Jones is a Damn Good actor..He deserved his most recent Oscar Nomination for the thriller "No Country for Old Men"..

Re: Susannah York Dies: Oscar winner TOM JONES, dies at age 72

I was a huge fan of Susannah York ... so sad to learn of her passing. :(

Ned,

the ones on the rag would bitch if you hung them with a new rope or the

guillotine had a new blade. Thank you for trying to keep things timely and

informing as you do. Like my old granny used to say...Even God isn't perfect...

he made me and you.

Smile guy...thx...|

Actually no, he was nominated that year 2007 for ¨In the Valley of Elah¨

He had equal awards buzz for ¨No Country for Old Men¨ too, but in the end they gave him the nomination for the above mentioned film.

A terrible loss. May she RIP.

Tom Jones, A Man For All Seasons and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? are all amazing amazing films.

very sorry to hear about Ms. York; she had a small role in some of the Superman movies, but memorable. Also, thanks for the update about the thread title. (see below).

/begin small rant: (NOT directed at the OP)
I also thought that both Ms. York and Tom Jones had died. Just goes to show how poorly written news articles and titles are nowadays. I saw a CNN article title a couple days ago that didn't make sense until you read the article:

"Current wars deserve a general ranking with best from WWII, vets say"

When I read that I thought the vets were saying that they wanted the public to rank wars from best to worst. The article is really about how they want Gen. Petraeus to be elevated to five-star status. Unless it's a direct quote, the writer should be clearer about the subject. They try to compress so much into the title(s) that they have confused the reader. Journalism fail.

/end rant; sorry.

I didn't see many of her movies, but I enjoyed the ones I saw. The last thing I saw her in was Superman II when she returned to replace Marlon Brando who demanded more money to use the footage he'd already been paid for in the film. It was cheaper to bring Susannah back and refilm Brando's sceens.

She had a long and prestigious career.

I'm sure I have seen at least 20 films in which she appeared. Some were distinguished (Man for Seasons, Tom Jones) and some were horrendous (Sister George, The Maids).

But York was just an uninteresting participant in them. She and Sarah Miles seemed interchangeable as 1960s 'dolly birds' and I always assumed they both won their initial place in the industry by sleeping with the producer.
