I want to take up swimming soon, because I like it (though I haven't done it for 10 years!) and because I've heard it's benefitial for your health.

I'm a slim guy in my twenties and I also started lifting weights about a month ago to see if I can get any muscles at all.

So, what I was wanting to know is what the main benefits of swimming are, especially the visible effects of swimming. Will it help me to build muscular mass, or are all its benefits non-visible ones??

Besides, there's a body type you call "swimmers". What do you mean by that stereotype?

They are visible benifits, but they wont help you build mass, it's more of an excersize that gets you cut. Along with that it gets you better cardio, a lot better cardio at that, swimming and biking are the best, IMO, at increasing your ability with your heart and lungs.

A swimmers body type is usually very lean, the muscles are very striated, and they're not usually bulky in size. They are well defined, and usually on the we'll call it 'average' build side.

Unlike weightlifting, swimming will NOT add much bulk.
Visible muscle gain will be minimal, at best.
However, you will develop a smooth, sculpted look that many men find EXTREMELY HOT!!!

Look at your Avatar, Fed.
THAT is a "Swimmer's Build."

Good Luck!!!

well, swimming, if done right, is very good for cardio, but as has been said, will not do much visibly. The weightlifting will do much more for you that way. However, combined, these seem to be very good for overall fitness. yes, swimmers' bodies are not usually bulky, not very big muscles, more strecthed out, unlike waterpolo. But yea, try swimming. it's a lot of fun. good luck

Swimming is mostly cardio, so it's not going to make you build large muscles. However, unlike most other cardio activities such as running or cycling, it works muscles throughout your whole body (upper, lower, stomach). That should help you tone more than just your legs. Plus, there's always the fringe benefit of seeing all those guys in their speedos at the pool.

I, personally don't think that there is anything better than swimming! I'm more of a runner myself and train 5-6 days a week but I do go swimming 3-4 days a week at the Gym!

What the running and swimming has done for my body is fantastic and I can't thank the inventor of swimming enough lol!

If you keep at the weights and train by doing laps in the pool you can't go wrong!

I agree with above. Couple the weights (which build mass) with the swimming (which builds definition) and you get a great look. Swimming is also good cardiovascularly. The only benefit running has to swimming is stimulating bone growth. Since we're male, osteoporosis isn't as much of a concern, but just a thought. But running is much harder on the joints. And as stated, a swimmer's body is in your avatar (what annoys me is people who say they have a swimmer's body when really they're just slim... there IS a difference). I love swimming.

Swimming will build up your cardiovascular system and therefore your endurance, in any sport will be greater. Be sure to go easy at first as shoulder joints and ligaments which are trouble areas, need to be gradually strengthned in order to avoid long term injuries or injuries that take a long time to heal. Be sure to start with a gentle warm up that involves stretching and simulated swimming moves. You may go so far as warming up your shoulders with hot packs before starting for the first few weeks, then afterward , stretching them and icing them for about 10 to 15 minutes after your swim. Listen to your body...if you feel any pain, think about just kicking around in the pool with a kick board or by hanging on to the edge of the pool just using your legs for the rest of the session. Also you can do laps using your legs, and only using your arms to sort of steer you. Doing this will insure that your ligaments and muscles are not doing too much too soon.

Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it. And if you say that the combination of lifting weights and swimming will make me look hot, then that's what I'm gonna do!

I didn't know that the guy of the avatar has a swimmer kind of body. Now I know that that's the way I wanna look like.

About the benefit of seeing the guys in speedos, well, it's not so common in my country to use the speedos, but we rather use shorts for swimming.

But there's the benefit of sharing the shower with the other guys, and there there's no speedos or shorts interrupting the sight. By the way, after the weights sessions I always meet a guy in the shower who's driving me crazy, he's so fucking hot, but that's topic for another thread.

I'll keep you updated on my progress, and maybe somday, when I see any progress in my body, I'll show you the pics of the final results!
