Hi all!
i have been swimming a lot lately, and have been a bit lazy with the sunscreen. I usually go for about 30minutes a day, and for the entire time, i stay under water snorkeling.
Is there a chance that i might be in danger of getting skin cancer because of this? I dont suntan and my body is almost fully submerged except for my head when i come up sometimes for air. From my highschool science class i remember that water deflects direct sunlight so i have always assume that it was safe if you are submerge in the water.

Water magnifies the suns effects by approximately 25%, so the effects sun has on your skin are made worse by water not better, refraction bends the light as it passes between air and water it doesnt ameliorate it altogether.

Sun exposure is like many risk factors, usually no single exposure can be said to "cause" skin cancer but these exposures while swimming as well as other exposure to sunlight, particularly where you were burnt, combine to increase ur probability of developing skin cancer compared to the population.

I suggest you wear high spf garments, eg rash vests, while snorkelling and find a good water resistant SPF 30+ sun screen to wear at the beach and re-apply it regularly if your swimming.

I wish I could see the sun, and I wish it was warm out, but instead, I have to look at about 20" of snow and its getting old.

Watch the sun - I had my first bout of skin cancer at 30 - the victum of my own mispent youth!

Thanks guys for your advice! i always had this weird thought that the suns rays was less intense under water because of refraction. Guess i was wrong, and i will now be using sunscreen prior to swimming now.
Just one more question, do you know if you have to reapply sunscreen after swimming even though you are not gonna be exposed to the sun anymore? I usually go from my pool to the indoor shower so i dont reapply.

not neccessary if your heading back inside but if your gonna go lie on the beach for a while, slop on the sunscreen

The risks are even higher if you swim in an area that has a big hole in the ozone layer. That's the case with Australia and I believe Chile and Brazil have the same problem too.

eh, i swim 2.5-3 hours a day without sunscreen, and have had no problems. it is good to put it on, but i dont think its totally necessary.
also, i think as long as you are 3 ft under, sun effects can't reach you, but i wouldnt take my word on that.

Several years ago I went swimming for two days in a row out in strong sun without sun screen. I have red hair and pale skin...I burn in the light that comes out of the refrigerator. After the first day I got a little burned but didn't think much of it. After the second day I had second degree burns covering most of my body. I couldn't move for a solid week. That included breathing, sitting, and laying. I basically just had to stand there naked as still as possible. I haven't been swimming since.

The moral of the story: WEAR SUNSCREEN!

No and i wouldnt recommend anyone else take your word on it either. This is not very good advice. If your stats are correct you are 21, even if you had spent every day in the sun since you were born I would not expect you to have developed skin cancer at this age. The cascade of genetic mutations that occur in cancer formation are long and complicated and usually require time and repeated damage. Also as we age our ability to repair or replace damaged sections of DNA is reduced. Basically it is a long usually slow process (there are of course exceptions with spontaneous or highly malignant variants.

Sun exposure is a risk factor, like smoking for lung cancer and drinking for liver cancer, not everyone wil get it but a fair chunk will. Saying that sun exposure is not a worry cause a 21 year old has been out in the sun and doesnt have a visible diagnosed skin cancer is pretty reckless.

Be careful and safe, exposure in moderation is the key, we need sun for vitamin D, mental health and immune function but we need to be careful and especially avoid exposures to the point of burn.
