Hi JUBers,

I'm kinda worried and need advice.

I was in Toronto over gay Pride and went to Steamworks, the local gay sauna. It was teeming with people (had to wait 45 min to get in). I sat in the jaccuzzi a couple of times, steam bath, sauna - the usual business. I did not have sex with anyone not did I touch anyone directly. After I got back a friend told me that there is a syphilis epidemic in the city and that Steamworks is at the centre. Am I at any risk of getting Syphlis?

I have read up about the symptom, and they all seem quite generic. I did not get the chancre sore anyway; but have been feeling kinda itchy though there are no visible rashes. Am I just being a hypochondriac?

I live in Dubai hence going and just getting a syphilis test can land me in a trouble, but if there is a serious health risk, then I may have to travel to another country to get tested.

Syphilis is an STD anyone can get - Straight people get it too. Unless you're referring to your Avatar saying "Partnered".
 
I have always wondered why anyone would get into a hottub with strangers. It just seems like a breeding ground for crud. I can only imagine what a bathhouse one must be like.
 
I would educate myself on how syphilis is spread before worrying myself to death over it. I also have to question why you'd jump in a sauna with a 45 minute wait time... wasn't there anything to do at Pride?

It's unclear where your friend came up with this. It's true that cases of syphilis are up about 15% in the past couple of years and about 75% of those cases are among men who have sex with men.

However, there is not "center" at any particular place. The increase is largely due to decreased use of condoms and an increase in high risk behaviors. It tracks an overall increase of STDs about gay men and minorities.

Based upon your description, you would not have contracted syphilis. There are lots of things that can be transmitted in a jacuzzi or in any gym however syphilis would only be transmitted if you had sex with someone who was infected.

Moufofkaus, there was a lot to do there. Just not much at 2 in the morning. Regardless, it was a rather protracted loss of reason.

Karabulut, thanks for your advice, as usual. I guess i was getting being a hypochondriac. These STDs sure play a part in keeping gay guys relatively chaste. :P
