Re: People you miss seeing on here - after

Actually i do want an apology, i think it would go a long way to sorting out the bad blood between us.

I understand you won't want to lose face by posting it publicly so please feel free to send it in a pm or a post comment.

Oh good heaven's. I have no intention of doing anything by pm or post comment. And an apology does not cause loss of face; if anything; the reverse would be true.

As I indicated on my return after the 3 day ban, it was suggested to me that the underage kid thing had been reported by you resulting in my suspension. And I reported this on GS.

So I apologize abjectly and profusely for all the world....or at least the diminishing number of posters on this site....to read. The information was wrong, I should not have written this without having verification and I am grievously and profoundly sorry for any embarrassment or loss of reputation that you have suffered either here on JUB, or over in 'Shelbyville'.

mea culpa. mea culpa. mea maxima culpa.

But from everything I see, I doubt if it changes a thing about the nature of our sanguine relationship.

Re: People you miss seeing on here - after

Well it is nice to see that those complaining about JUB and other members can take over a thread entirely for their own self gratification and squabbling.

This thread was about people you missed not a constant retaliation between members who do not agree with each other.

Could you please take your argument elsewhere and leave this thread to the subject it was started for. Note that I said please.

I accept your apology.

For me this matter is now over (*8*)

In the [now removed] Justin Bieber thread(s), certain members repeatedly posted unflattering remarks about the performer. Because there was only one thread for both Bieber admirers and his detractors, it was the correct place for either observation. The timing and frequency of the negative remarks led to criticism from some of the admirers. They indicated that members who are not interested in the performer should refrain from the continuous negative rhetoric and allow them to enjoy the thread. The detractors indicated that they were merely posting their viewpoints about the performer and that they had the right to do so. In reality, much of the correspondence between admirers and detractors became personal, including insults and excessive baiting. From time to time a member would become overly abusive and receive a warning or infraction. The members who claimed to only post their [negative] viewpoints about the performer frequently repeated the same points they’d already made in the past and seemed compelled to resubmit those viewpoints whenever admirers posted new content. Those same members also included excessive baiting and interpersonal remarks directed toward other specific members when leaving their negative viewpoints about the performer. Periodically, some of the admirers went overboard to express their disgust about the detractors and got into trouble for their abusive conduct.

The pattern in the Bieber thread(s) is similar to the situation involving Fade2Black in mid-December. It is also similar to a situation in the Religion sub-forum, where a member might post a topic involving some aspect of Christianity only to be barraged by (often the same) members who feel compelled to post their own detraction from the entire concept of a God. These anti-God members tend to derail what could otherwise be a meaningful discussion for members interested in the topic.

We also see a similar pattern in CE&P where members with minority opposing political views sometimes repeat the same talking points – even after they’ve been debunked in previous discussions. Sometimes the regular posters in that sub-forum reach a point of disgust and begin to attack their nemesis with personal insults, etc. Other members sometimes pile on the attack or mount a counter-attack until a particular thread is filled with lots of abusive remarks and infraction-worthy posts. It is often difficult to determine who should be punished. The insults are clear contraventions of the Code of Conduct, but the member who caused the whole problem – the instigator – is “merely expressing his viewpoint.”

2. Do not drag arguments or personal issues from one thread to another.
That's already added.

...

You see how enforced it seems to be.

There seems to be confusion about this issue. A sticky appears in several places (including Hot Topics) which prohibits the use of personal information from the no-flame zones. This policy applies to the entire forum.

The CE&P Posting Guidelines feature the most robust policies with respect to interpersonal disagreements, but as rareboy [perhaps unintentionally] pointed out, “I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.”

I don’t recall any similar guideline outside of [STRIKE]Kansas[/STRIKE] CE&P.

COURTESY & RESPECT

When debating, express your opinion about a person's ideas, not about them personally. Any post containing a direct personal insult will be removed or edited, regardless of the content of the rest of the post.

Do not engage in baiting; either creating threads for that purpose, or in posts toward other members. Do not disrupt the flow of conversation by making statements or insinuations that are deliberately inflammatory or which expand a disagreement from one discussion to another.

Never insult or impugn the character of another Jubber through posts, threads, PMs, or comments. If you find yourself having difficulty refraining from insulting, baiting or other negative impulses, please log off for a while to calm down.

It is a fundamental principle that content from post comments or private messages is not to be re-posted in the open forum. If you receive an inappropriate private message or comment, promptly report it to the moderators. (See the section titled “Personal Conflicts” in the Problem Resolution thread.)

Never intentionally misspell or misrepresent a fellow Jubber's screen name for any reason, most especially to bait or insult him/her.

About the CoC though, I think two things need to be added.

1. No deliberately baiting or taunting other members (it's arguable whether this falls under harassment or not. I don't believe the mods consider it does, and I think it's why a lot of people manage to toe the line and drive so many people away without actively breaking the rules).

2. Do not drag arguments or personal issues from one thread to another.

I think the only issue that would arise is that the mods would have to make value judgments in deciding what is and isn't considered baiting/taunting. It would require that the mods have an active presence on the boards, and it would require that they're aware of/understand users' histories with each other.

Though moderators do tend to learn about member histories and interactions over time, it is important for the various rules and guidelines to require as little subjective interpretation as possible. Else, we end up with claims of preferential treatment or personal bias. Most situations in which an issue is not clear-cut require, or at least benefit from, input by multiple moderators. That delays efforts of intervention and consumes moderator time – which members, in turn, might attribute to “aren’t active enough.”

… the mods just aren't active enough.

Let’s table the portion of discussion about moderator activity levels for two reasons. 1) We are more active than you realize. 2) If there is a problem with the level of moderator activity, it can be fixed.

I'm sure there was some reason for this thread to not only be resurrected but left open.

This rule was broken lately, but the posts still remain. Just a heads up.

This reminds me of the barrage atheists face in the "funny pictures" thread.

But really, though there are two "anti-God" culprits who regularly lower the tenor of conversation in the religion forum, there are also a comparable number of "pro-God" culprits who do similarly, abusing (not criticizing) the faith of their fellow christians, and of course the myriad beliefs of some aspect of non-Christianity. These pro-God members tend to derail...

Why was my post deleted opinterph?

The content to which you responded was removed. Your response included an abusive statement. Quiet removal spared you and several other members an infraction.

More important, I need to talk to you in order to follow up on a matter you brought to my attention earlier. I need to make certain I correctly understand your position.

Please create a new thread in the Ask the Moderators forum.

Didn't even notice Pat was gone, blocked his ......

Well, you're sensible Kabluey, because it's inevitable that people have different cultural attitudes in our pluralist, trans-national, trans-cultured JUB community.

We know Gay Divorce will follow soon after the introduction of Gay Marriage and i'm pretty sure that Irreconcilable Differences will be the most common reason given in all those divorce proceedings.

As you can imagine I have Irreconcilable Differences with that splenetic, Canadian elder-gay and have had them on Ignore for over a year now. :? I wish some more would do so.

And you are right the ignore feature works pretty well.
