I want something with which I can sit in a café and access Internet.

I want to post on JUB when I am not at home.

I want to Skype with friends when I am out in town.

I want to take photos and videos.

I would quite like to listen to music where ever I happen to be.

I want to send e-mails whilst sitting in a restaurant all on my own.

I want something that is not too heavy so that I can travel everywhere with it.

So do I buy an I-pad air?

Cost is not a real consideration.

I use a Kindle Fire at home, and could do all those things on it if I paid for the "roaming" service. I just use it at home with a WiFi connection, and take it on trips and use hotel WiFi. It only has a skyping camera facing you though, so taking pictures/video (scenery) is tricky.

I don't have an Ipad Air, but we do have a mini. My advice is to pay the extra for bigger on board diskspace so that you can keep more files (photos, movies, music, documents, ebooks etc). If you want to use it anywhere, get one with a data sim card plus wi-fi so that you can get online anytime, but use the wi-fi connection when available. Otherwise wifi only means you're restricted to places with wifi that allows you to access porn sites like JUB. Not all free-wifi hot spots allows you to use their service for porn. You will be tied to a data sim card contract if you do take that option, so weigh up the costs and data allowance appropriately. Good luck!

BTW, I use a Samsung Tab 3.0 7", and found that the battery life is rubbish - an hour and a half or so. The iPad mini on the other hand lasts three or four times longer. So, research what people say about the battery life of the machine you're looking at too. You can connect the iPad to your tv using a HDMI adaptor and a HDMI cable, then locating the 'source' by choosing the device channel to view your tablet's screen on your tv. The adaptors for apple products aren't cheap though... I found out my 7" tab doesn't support the HDMI/MHL connection, so also look for other capabilities of the machine before buying.

Thanks that was helpful. I hadn't thought about the TV aspect nor that some Wi-Fi sites might be restrictive.

What is your phone and computer? If you have an iPhone or mac, go Ipad they all seamlessly sync up. If you have an android phone, go android tablet. Android and IOS are pretty different systems.

If you use a carrier pigeon and live under a rock, stick with the Ipad, My mom was able to figure it out so anybody can!

My tech experience is not quite so basic as that but I do understand the analogy. :D

Well if your mum can do it I will give it a try.

Thanks.

I'd look into a Surface 3 or Surface Pro 3 if you want more power stuff, but for basic multimedia/internet stuff, well.. any ole' Android tablet can do. If money isn't an option, an iPad is also an option.

Jub is a bit shitty on Android and iPad, whether using an app or the web interface.
Could try a cheap Windows tablet, not an RT one. They do what you're asking and are good for heavy web users, moreso than app buyers, which suits me.

I am still hesitating about buying one. Your comment rather puts me off me off as I would like to use it for JUB when I am away from home.

Yeah, I've had all three, have used my Windows convertible tablet the most, mostly because I was sick of videos on YouTube saying they aren't available on my iPad or Android, plus mobile versions of web sites still mostly suck.

Rear cameras on phones are usually better than those on tablets, but the webcams are about the same.

Thanks for all your replies.

Finally my friends are going to buy me an iPad for my 65th birthday so the choice is settled.

lol in which case you have no choice of what you can do .. you are tied to apple loving , sorry to hear that
