Someone asked if anyone lives somewhere ugly. I do - Fresno, CA.

It's flat and brown and the culture is contained about one square mile.

That was taken in the Tower District. It's the liberal neighborhood where they hold the annual GLBT film festival (it's on the marquee), the gay pride parade, Margi Gras, etc.
Aside from the strip seen in the picture, Tower is mainly residential. Some of the oldest homes and apartment buildings are in this area. My boyfriend and I live a few blocks south of this intersection.

The only good thing about Fresno is that it's basically in the center of California. Los Angeles and San Francisco are three hours away; Yosemite is an hour north, Kings Canyon Nat'l Park is an hour east, and Sequoia Nat'l Park is a little over and hour southeast; and the beach (San Luis Obispo, Monterrey, or Santa Cruz) is two hours away.

New for us: our shiny stadium, rebuilt for the coming Fifa World Cup 2010.

It cost 400 million pounds, give or take.

It's taken almost 3 years to build, with all the infighting and legal actions. "It's a horrid blight on our skyline!" according to the nay-sayers.

I rather like it. And I will be in it on 18 June 2010 for the first match of the tournament to be held in Cape Town.

I live in a new subdivision that's as cookie cutter as the rest. Give my neighborhood 10 years or so to grow trees and develop individuality and things will be grand.
