Taking my Brother to see The Queen

of course he knows next to no english and will chatter at me insesantly about what every word of dialogue means

I wonder where he got the big mouth from

no one else in our family has it

He has been feeling homesick for europe and I thought it would cheer him up

has anyone seen it yet? does it have a euro feel to it, or is it an american view of the royalty? Hellen Mirren is one of my favorite actresses so i know i will like it no matter what.

is it the kind of film that a non english speaking person would enjoy?

It comes out on general release here in France next week.

Obviously as an English gentleman living in France I shall certainly go to see it.

Would appreciate hearing your opinions; not a full scale cinema critic, just if you enjoyed it or not.

Yes, it looks like it will be a fun one. I want to see that as well. It has gotten some good reviews. I'm waiting for it to come out in a theater that is a little closer. I didn't want to drive to Hollywood to see it. Come on Pasadena!

Definitely filmed from a British point of view, BTW - not like that bloomin' awful Charles and Diana rubbish the US did a while back

It is quite visual, so your bro will be able to follow the jist of it, but perhaps not all. It's very 'dry' at times - very British! You will definitely like it - if you get peace to catch all the dialogue that is

Helen Mirren is excellent, but the film is like a not very good television mockumentary.

It doesn't reveal anything significant that hasn't been previously reported and a number of the characters are just caricatures. I thought it might touch on why people are still interested in the idea of royalty or whether the change in the Queen's attitude was real or lasting, etc. But it doesn't go much below the surface.

I think the critical reviews overrate it because of Mirren's performance. Most people will probably find it pretty boring.

Pesonally I thought Mirren's performance stole the show, and it far outshines the others.

There's no way for anyone to really know what HM thought about any of the events covered by the film, but Mirren does lend a touching emotional take to a woman who's first thought is of duty at every occasion.

I particularly liked her scene with the PM after the death of Diana. Her delayed return to London was always, in my opinion, perfectly understandable. The furore she endured by not immediately screaming back to Buck House was a gross insensitivity, and I believe Mirren's scenes may make many think for the first time at how wrong it was for them to make the demands they did at the time.

It's pure supposition, but Mirren does it with great style (Even if she DID remind me of Maureen Lipman at times )

well it was a great movie

Mirren's impressive tallents were more than up for the challenge of playing an emotionally void woman. I went to harvard square to see it, a hard crowd to please by any standard, and at the end of the movie the entire room applauded.

it is a dry film, and since the main character is the queen of england, i dont see how it couldnt be. Mirrens performance was so subtle that she had me welling up as she shed just one tear for the dead stag... a symbolic nod to the hunt that Diana faced as princess and the queens understanding of what royals sacrifice to serve their people and that she was forced to openly acnowledge her adversary, the princess of wales was more popular in death than she was as a living queen.

I can honestly say there were times that she had me totally along for the ride, and i forgot that it was mirren and not the queen herself.

i was charmed by the woman who played the queen mum, but her performance wasn't as exacting and recreative of her subject as mirren's was.

one point of particular intrigue to me was the juxtaposition of the royal men around her, basically a collection of buffoons, to the PM and his staff, the over acomplishing support that drug her, kicking and screaming at times,(well she did raise an eyebrow in comtempt one or twice when they caused her tea to go cold.. a veritable explosion of emotion for E2) through her worst decisions. They served as her anchors, one in tradition, and one in common sense, as she tried to find her footing alone between them with only her mother as a real confidant and guide.

Although there weren't any new revelations in the plot, Mirrens performance made me feel that i understood the queens need for order in precedence and in history, and the meaning of her stoic nature as Queen to boot.

I would suggest that anyone who doesn't need flashy effects to enjoy a good script and performance to see the film.

I use the term "the Queen" to refer to someone that I used to know who was quite..uhm..queeny/flamy (and it's an inside joke and only a few people know who I mean - off-JUB of course)

I had a good time with The Dreu. The cinema made mcuh laughter seeing the queen with the television of her bedrooms. The dead deers rendered me very sad, as it made HRM Elisabeth.
