Tariffs in the second Trump Administration [SPLIT]

Where the fuck do you get the story that Canada has open border and free protection by the US? It makes no sense at all. Only 43 pounds of fentanyl came through the Canadian border which demonstrates how effective our drug seizures have been. And there are no hordes of migrants getting into Canada and then rushing your borders from up here. Again all these weird opinions without any facts or substance to back them up... all from your right wing bubble where angry red hats externalize all their own shortcomings.

I can imagine the red hats gaming out strategies to invade Canada to satisfy the growing lust in the US for war.

Also just going to point out that Canada's borders are tight enough that in accordance with our border control laws we didn't let a guy with 34 felony convictions into the country.

Instead, as a courtesy, our Prime Minister flew down to him.

What we know about Trump from the last time is that all you have to do is pay some lip service and usually he'll just move on to something else.
 
We are also heading into an election year and Trudeau is savvy enough to know that this can't become an election issue that our own toxic right wingers can use to divide the country.

This should pretty much remove it from the field.

It shouldn't be that difficult to reduce *checks my notes* the 43 pounds of fentanyl that was being smuggled into the US from Canada to half that amount.
 
AP article on Trump's trade war goes to the heart of the matter.

This is all about an imbalance of trade because of oil. Trump sees this as a 'subsidy' to Canada.

Ironically though, the US will still be paying the same prices for the oil if prices remain high and supplies tight and then 25% on top of that.

It has nothing to do with securing borders.

That is a lie to feed to the ignorant red hats.

By the way, I put all the American suppliers and manufacturers on notice this week that their products and services would be terminated if Trump imposes tariffs. It amounts to some millions at the moment. I probably should have left it skewed away from the US after 2018, but then Biden got back in and we pretended that the US might be a reliable trading partner again.

And of course just like last time, I have advised all the organizations that we support in the US that our gifts for 2024/2025 and beyond would be terminated if Trump Imposes tariff and that we would be advising our clients and Canadian friends, colleagues and suppliers to advise the same. If he doesn't, maybe we'll sponsor and support our beloved causes in the US...but I have to see some tangible proof now that they openly contest his policies.

It is the small things that eventually may add up, because we know for a fact that the trailer dwelling red hats in the south aren't going to pony up.

The last time, the Muslim ban and the NAFTA 2.0 wars cost a lot of tourist and convention dollars for a lot of US venues.

This time, it is personal.
 
Canadians almost universally recognize Trump a s toxic psycopath...a stupid, economically illiterate buffoon and a 3 year old with a grab bag of emotions.

We almost all think that Americans were incredibly stupid to put him back in the oval office and have zero respect for him or those who enable him. Maybe some wing-nuts out in Albertastan think he is hot stuff but since the election we all regard him as a clown.

But Europe regardee Hitler and Mussolini as clowns too. And look where they led the entire world.

Tariffs are really just a leftover from an earlier and less efficient style of economy -- today they are counterproductive almost always.

If he actually wants to reduce U.S. debt, a 0.1% tax (= one cent per $10) on all electronic transactions would reap on the order of $3.5 trillion per year -- throw that against the national debt, starting with debt to non-allies.
Though if everything after the even trillion amount went into highway upgrades (interstate & U.S. Highways) that would be a good idea.

The Mexican president is being a bit deceptive, oversimplifying a complex situation -- that 70% of illegal weapons is actually 70% of those which have traces run on them, which tends to be about three-fifths of illegal weapons. Plus the weapons from the U.S. are generally "street weapons"; the cartels get full-bore military weapons from farther south -- though some of those are ultimately from the U.S.; the U.S. sells them to Latin American governments for their militaries, and corrupt officers sell them to criminals who then sell them to the cartels. Not too long ago a bunch of U.S.-made "street weapons" were intercepted coming from SE Asia into Mexico as well, enough to suggest that -- if that's an example of regular arms traffic -- about two-thirds of all illegal weapons in Mexico ultimately come from the U.S., which ends up making the 70% not too far off after all.

To me that means it is the perfect time for Dem-controlled states to change how U.S. Representatives are elected; make them statewide by party so that small parties can get elected: the GOP will splinter at least three different ways and would never ever again be able to control the House.

A guy on Oregon Public Broadcasting last week said that Trump's tariffs would raise the price of a gallon of gas in Oregon by forty cents on the gallon. A commentator added that oil companies will add five cents per gallon -- and blame Canada while raking in the profits.
