Tariffs in the second Trump Administration [SPLIT]

One result of the tariffs and the naked oligarchy inn the US has been a definite downturn in support for retailers like Amazon and others.
Also of note... the overpriced grocery chain Whole Foods is owned by Amazon. Trump fired one of the members of the National Labor Relations Board last week (illegally since Presidents can't fire board members). This caused the NLRB not to have a quorum, so they cannot convene a meeting.

Meanwhile, one of the Whole Foods stores in the USA voted to unionized. Amazon is refusing to recognize the union because the NLRB has not approved the unionization of that store.... because the NLRB can't convene a meeting without a quorum.

Coincidence? Boycott Whole Foods.

Bezos is stupid enough...like the head of Starbucks was/is to think that you can get a company to attract the upper middle class consumer who won't care about workers until they do.

Starbucks has closed tons of outlets her in Canada and I believe the US. The traffic decline has been both a reflection of consumer boredom and price resistance, but also here against predatory corporate practises.

Whole foods has always been a dud here in Canada because most of us have never bought the bullshit. And we have other strong food retailers. In the US, I imagine it will be simple supply/demand economics that drives their shoppers back to the cheapest food retailers over the next year or so when prices don't fall.

We already have a love/hate relationship with Loblaw Foods and Sobeys...but in a minute, if either fucked over their employees the same way that Dominion Foods did back in the eighties, we would kill them just as quickly as we did that corporation (see Conrad Black).

I for one can hardly wait for Amazon to collapse in the same way as Sears catalogue stores did, but this time for actual moral reasons.

If everybody who says they hate Amazon stopped buying from them, they would indeed collapse.
But they don't. Even the rightest-on who know exactly how antisocialy the company behave still say "I haven't got time to search around"
Pathetic. If you can use the internet at all, you can find what you need from somewhere less evil, same price or cheaper.

A lot of us developed Amazon addictions during the pandemic. It was just too convenient to get stuff delivered.

Some of the stories about how Amazon mistreated employees during the pandemic did make me uneasy with buying from Amazon. Since then, I've turned sour on Amazon because there's so much second-rate Chinese-made crap on Amazon. Bezos' interference with WaPo in the lead-up to the election and his presence at the inauguration was the last straw.

I am now going out of my way to find a local vendor where possible but admittedly, many are behind-the-times or have reduced inventory because of Amazon's aggressive tactics. It's very hard to find books or DVDs or CDs outside of Amazon.

Here's the story on Amazon/Whole Foods and the UFCW:

Amazon-owned Whole Foods asked regulators to dismiss the results of a union election at a Philadelphia store, citing President Donald Trump’s firing of two leaders at a federal labor regulator.

Whole Foods’ objections in a Monday filing show the company attempting to exploit some of the disruption Trump has caused inside federal agencies in the first weeks of his new term. The tactic could delay efforts by the United Food and Commercial Workers union to organize workers inside the e-commerce behemoth.

Trump last week fired two leaders at the National Labor Relations Board, the agency that adjudicates disputes over labor organizing. That left the nation’s top labor regulator with only two members, rendering it unable to do business due to a lack of quorum.

You can hate the company for their tax evasion, for their abuse of employees and for their selling of sometimes substandard or non genuine goods.
I started hating them in the first wave when they used their muscle to put small book and record stores out of business. Some haters are late to the party and only took notice when the company gave financial support to the fascism that is now eviserating your country.
These are all reason enough to have nothing to do with this evil monopoly.
It is still legal to buy books and discs from legit retailers, do it while you still can.

^ We do.

We pretty much stopped buying anything through Amazon about a year or so ago and try to get it direct from the manufacturer or local retail.

Ok, that's Amazon on the naughty step.
Next up the Apple company.
Tim Cook likes to create the impression that his company is gay friendly, then he goes and gives financial support to those who are now trying to take away all the rights we have fought for in the last fifty years.
His devices are nicely designed but they are made in the same sweatshops out of the same components as every other brand. They are not personaly blessed by God like the Apple fanboys think.
Lenovo are not in the least bit gay friendly but in China nobody can be, at least there is none of the Apple two-facedness. Our Lenovos were cheap and they never go wrong.

We dumped Apple years ago when they stopped supporting a key software platform we use.

And nothing Apple has produced since then has had the least appeal to me to buy it. So much of it is just not that special.

HP is our go-to.

So even though the tariffs are paused, there continues to be fall-out. All ads on-line for grocery stores are followed by a flood of comments about whether the products advertised are Canadian made with Canadian ingredients. We see the signs up in all the stores highlighting Canadian labels and companies.

As telling are the flood of cancellations of tourist trips to the US with Canadians cancelling visits to Florida, Texas, Alaska etc.

We cancelled our trip this year which usually represents about $8 - 10K in value and except for those who booked way in advance of this fiasco and are stuck this winter , everyone we know has cancelled their plans to the US.

Seems like small potatoes? Apparently not. Apparently we do drop some cash to visit the US.

For fans of , cough cough, 'leather cleaner' choose Canada made brands over any of the US 'aromas'
After two hours of non stop 'leather cleaning' with Canadian Locker Room Plus, no headache at all. Pure quality.

Meanwhile, Trump is going to Plan B, taking a page from his first term playbook....Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum.

Back then, it was about 'security' as an emergency pretext, but now he doesn't even pretend any more.

This time it is just a tax grab in the name of protectionism.

And one assumes it is all steel and aluminum from all countries although I bet there will eventually be carve outs as his Republican donors have their interests in other countries hit.

But that is also part of the strategy like last time as well. He can shake them down for a few million and then exempt them from having to pay the tax.

This triggered the countervailing tariffs by Canada that targeted the red states, so I imagine this will be the response.

Or an "investment" from "Nissan"...

President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that Nippon Steel would no longer buy U.S. Steel as planned, but the Japanese company would instead invest in the symbolically important American business.

The U.S. president mistakenly referred to Nippon Steel as “Nissan,” the Japanese automaker. But it’s Nippon Steel’s bid that generated controversy as both Trump and his predecessor in the White House, Joe Biden, vowed to block the merger.

So yeah. Nippon is buying US Steel but it will just be called an 'investment'.

Got it.

When I was living in WEHO I only went to Whole Foods because they had basically a full restaurant in there with actually good, healthy food, that was cheaper than eating out in L.A. without having to stoop to fast food, cross the 101, or trek to the Valley; plus, it was very close to my apartment. It's always been an Austin thing, but I rarely shop there now. It used to be crunchy Hippie, but it's gotten kind of trendy and pretentious.

Still, there are markets where Whole Foods is an option that makes sense. These days if I want to get ripped off in the grocery store I go to Central Market which has all the pricey, and a much bigger selection of foods for which they can overcharge.

I have no idea why anyone would buy things from whole foods off of Amazon. In my experience the people who go to whole foods want to see the produce before they huy it. I guess if all you were buying was 360 brand shampoo that would work, but that's not what's motivating people to go in there in the first place.

Jeff Bezos is evil.

It's a start. If you want to get really strategic, pay special attention to the swing states that elected Toad. The more economic paun they feel the better the chances for '27. Aside from a general embargo, targeting Florida isn't going to do much to help.

That was/is exactly our strategy this time, like in 2017/18.

Hit the red states and industries that had the most to lose.

Right now it is all in limbo as we await the end of the month.
