Tariffs in the second Trump Administration [SPLIT]

I don't think Trump cares about that. At all.

I got my six-month car insurance renewal. It went up by $132 from March. I expected more, actually, but tariffs probably have something to do with it.

They've been going up for the past couple of years. Insurers blame the cost of repair parts (which often result in junking the car and paying off the trade-in value) and the increase in claims. That was before Trump's tariffs, which means it's going to get even worse. And it might just be the people that I share the road with, but I could swear they are even more reckless and obnoxious since the pandemic.

I agree there are more reckless and obnoxious drivers on the road. Stop signs, speed limits, and unexpired license plates appear to optional to a lot of these people. I've seen cars with temporary tags that expired in 2020. I don't know how they get away with it.

^^with regard to the temporary tags that have expired. . .when I had my old vehicle totaled back in April and replaced it with a pre-owned, the temporary tags, IIRC, came with about a 4 week window until they expired. When I finally received my registration sticker from my county tax office, they had been expired for at least one week. I suspect that this has become common in the larger jurisdictions around the country, where the tax office personnel can not keep up with all the new registrations [-X

A few weeks with expired temp tags is explainable. We routinely see temp tags, as well as plates that expired years ago. That's not due to volume of new registrations.

Japan Post will suspend commercial mail and gifts over $100 to the U.S. from Aug 27, joining Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, France, and Sweden due to new U.S. customs rules ending duty-free treatment. Letters and gifts under $100 still accepted.

For any MAGAts that haven't got the message yet....from the WSJ:

Part of the problem with the nostalgic Make America Great Again viewpoint is that China has no interest in going back to the 1950s. They are working from both short and long term plans. Contrast that to the much mentioned Project 2025, which is an 180 day plan.

When Trump got the boot in 2020, the Chinese didn't breathe a sigh of relief. Instead, they started plans for what they would do if Trump or someone like Trump returned to power.

So, when Trump did this:
United States President Donald Trump’s 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, which is expected to impact trade worth billions of dollars and risk thousands of jobs in the world’s most populous nation, took effect on Wednesday.

The US first slapped a 25 percent tariff on India on July 30 and a week later imposed an additional 25 percent, citing New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.

China did this:
  • U.S. tariffs and trade policies are pushing China and India closer.
  • India’s EV sector could gain from improved trade relations with China.
  • China’s economy stands to benefit from greater access to Indian market.
  • India’s ballooning trade deficit and border dispute with China have held back the relationship.

And now that just about everything on Amazon and on store shelves is made in China, this was allowed to happen:

Prices on imported low-cost goods are likely to rise soon, as a trade loophole allowing many retailers to avoid President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes is set to expire this week.

The exception, which applied to items shipped to the United States and valued at $800 or less, will end on Friday, Aug. 29, following the president’s executive order in late July, effectively sunsetting the "de minimis trade agreement" for all nations. In 2024, de minimis shipments were valued at more than $1.36 billion, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

This means consumers may see higher costs and possible supply disruptions, as the Trump administration effectively ends the duty-free program across the board.

Most items that you buy that aren't perishable or only has a domestic source is about to increase in price.

The de minimis change came from an Executive Order, even though Congress is given the power over tariffs in the Constitution.

Congress? Tariffs?

Like everything else, they have ceded the authority to the Executive Branch, likely to give them more time to fundraise for their own campiagns and bank accounts.

And the Dems are again complicit. They also likely think that this revenue stream, once in place, will be useful.
