Disgusting. A person isn't born with hate such as that, it has to be learned. Those girls are mighty young to be so evil. If they are dangerous now, think about how much more dangerous they will be as adults. They should be locked up for a very long time. I sympathize with the young man who was attacked. His wounds will heal but, the emotional scar is permanent.

I'm with you, I don't get hate crimes. Crime is crime, there is always hate involved. The punishments should be the same either way, no?

'Hate Crime' laws came about because many crimes motivated by hatred alone have gone unpunished or uninvestigated. No-one can use "he's just a fag" as a defense any longer and the police cannot use "he deserved it" as a reason not to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.

I'm not sure how it works in Canada...

Here in the U.S. the underlying crime would be a local or state offense -- whereas the "hate crime" (or motivation behind the crime) is a Federal offense...
