The difference between our reactions is this. When confronted with a story about the rape of children, I don't go digging around trying to justify the enterprise which enabled it.

I note reasons to doubt it.

Follow that logic, and conclude we should get rid of the human race.

And by the way, missionary work is colonial power.

There are —— literally — thousands upon thousands of stories on the internet, from governments and respected news outlets including broadcasters and residential-school survivors. It was so horrendous a truth-and-conciliation process was set up, patterned on South Africa’s — no thanks to the master-race Dutch Reformed Church — after apartheid ended.

Those who still deny the genocidal horrors brought about by the white Christian colonial masters are no better and no less liars than Holocaust deniers.

I don't claim any of them. It's established fact. If you want percentages (100 per cent) — the schools (also in the U.S.) existed only to wipe out all the native cultures and bring the kids to Jesus — read the 29,000 items at the second link.

Tough love and discipline, all right.

The abuse spread upward in the school hierarchy to include two school directors, who also turned a deaf ear to the students’ laments, according to the judge’s decision. When one complained about the predatory behaviour of two priests, the director retorted that the student should consider himself lucky to get so much attention and affection; . . .

Here’s your “tough love” for the helplessly needy part:

Two other students who complained about abuse were threatened with expulsion.
