I took drivers ed. at school as it was mandatory to get a license, I was 15 at the time.
I did well at the book work, it was a short course followed with a number of hours on the road. The on the road part was horrible.
The instructor was a high school teacher, there were 2 students per car. The boy who was in my car had been taught to drive by his dad and was just going through the motions so he could get a license. He drove for 1 and 1/2 hours, then it was my turn.
I had no experience behind the wheel, the instructor could not just set back and chill as he did for the first part of his day, I scared the hell out of him I guess.
He sat next to me yelling and complaining, this made me nervous, that made me drive worse. If my memory serves me correctly this went on for about 2 or 3 months, 2 days per week.
I did pass the drivers ed road test, then after 90 days I had to take the real road test, back then we went to the police station and an officer would take us out in our car, I had a beat up 1959 Ford, it had little upholstery, lots of rust and dents and no turn signals. The passenger compartment would get smoky as well so we had to leave the windows down, this worked out well as I had to use hand signals

.
I passed the test and promised the officer that I would get a better car.
