I think 'liberal' does have a somewhat different meaning over here, but I think you're wrong about the most liberal US Christians.

They don't get a lot of press, because they're too far to the left for the MSM. They're definitely much further to the left than the Democratic Party (though as you know that's not saying much, since the Dems would be the right in any country in Europe--except maybe Italy, which is reverting to fascism under their current lunatic asshole).

The first openly gay and sexually active priest in the entire Anglican Communion was ordained in the church where I sing every Sunday. AFAIK only the US Episcopal Church, of that Communion, has made an openly gay bishop. I've heard some fairly explicit socialism (though not by name) preached in that church. They had a drive to replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, and put together a discounted purchase plan for members. They put their whole endowment (that is, the money the church itself has saved) up to build a community center near the projects (council housing, I think you call it) where the town's poorest people live, and made sure their kids have somewhere to go after school and that they do their homework.

The pastor there (a heterosexual man with a wife and children who looks more like a football coach than anything else) conducts same-sex weddings with great frequency. When one straight couple had their wedding as part of the church service (a very old-fashioned way to do it), his sermon mentioned that "we mustn't forget that our gay and Lesbian brothers and sisters are still being denied full equality in the realm of marriage."

The hymn "Too Often, God, Your Name is Used" was commissioned from Thomas Troeger based on this pastor's words, from an interview a member of the vestry conducted with him. It was set to music by Kay Lee Scott, to a tune that he named after this pastor. We premiered it at his 30th anniversary at the church. Here's the first verse:

So love and justice are refused
To people you hold dear.
O never let us use your name
To harm or hurt or kill
Or consecrate a vicious aim
