What's the appeal of text messaging? Admittedly, I'm big on texting and my perspective is a bit different from most who have posted in this thread b/c I primarily use it for business.
1. Texting is the quickest way to communicate. The person you're trying to reach may not have their laptop w/ them at all times, so that throws out email (texting can sync to email too). Phoning them isn't ideal b/c they could be working or otherwise busy. Most people I know have their BB on them at all times, so the message is likely to be received.
2. Texting is easy to multitask w/ something else. This is especially true for meetings, driving (it's hands free and yes, I know some still don't like it), dinner, etc.
Multitasking does cause problems, I'm absolutely aware of that. It probably is better to concentrate on one thing at a time. I also understand that some people find texting rude. In an ideal world, moving at a slower pace would work. However, today's job market is highly competitive. Employees are expected to work far over 40 hours a week and have to juggle enormous amounts of stress and pressure. Everything needed done yesterday, and if you can't do it, another employee will. Of course, this just might lead you to the unemployment office. Often, the only way to get everything done is to multitask, hence, sending out reminders via text messaging during a meeting. In my world, texting is the norm, so I don't find it rude.
3. Texting is the least offensive means of communication. Using a cell phone in a restaurant, a department store, or anywhere in public, ruffles feathers. People complain that you aren't paying attn to what you're doing and are therefore a hazard. Or, you're talking to loud and are inconsiderate. Texting is my compromise. At least it doesn't make noise. And yes, I could stay at home or work until I finished everything I needed to do, but issues always crop up at anytime of day (a witness bails, a law is overturned, etc.) and I need that info. immediately. Also, if I waited until everything was finished, Jas and I would starve to death.
Additionally, Jason and I work in the evenings in the war room. I'll usually text (it's synced w/ email) so I don't interrupt him w/ a phone convo. If I get up and leave the room, he usually comes w/ me unless it's a restroom break. Texting is just easier b/c I don't want to interrupt his thoughts.
4. Texting provides the immediate response that our society is now used to having. The internet definitely changed how we communicate and now, it's expected that it will be instantaneous. Admittedly, I'm a workaholic and am just as impatient as everyone else. I like the immediate response too.
5. Texting allows me to communicate w/ people that I don't really like but still have to deal w/. This one is self explanatory.
Those reasons pretty much sum it up for me.
I dislike and have no patience for pointless texting. I cringe at "I'm bored." And, I spit fire at the asinine text forwards. I let the offender know it bugs me, and it usually stops
