texting

I think Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, et al. are pretty silly, yet plenty of adults are involved in those. Those forms of social networking also cut out the day to day human contact. Twitter? It's all about MEEEEE! Yeah, well no one cares if you picked up Mickey D's at 2:00 pm on Tuesday. I poked you, now poke me back. Yeah, poke your damn self how about that. Many adults claim that they're involved in these things b/c it builds business contacts. Well, what happened to joining the social organization for your field and networking in person at those events? After all, isn't face to face contact more memorable anyway?

A lot of things younger people do annoy me, but I distinctly remember older generations saying the exact same thing about mine. ;) Of course, just b/c I think something is silly, doesn't make it so. The same is true for text messaging.

What's the appeal of text messaging? Admittedly, I'm big on texting and my perspective is a bit different from most who have posted in this thread b/c I primarily use it for business.

1. Texting is the quickest way to communicate. The person you're trying to reach may not have their laptop w/ them at all times, so that throws out email (texting can sync to email too). Phoning them isn't ideal b/c they could be working or otherwise busy. Most people I know have their BB on them at all times, so the message is likely to be received.

2. Texting is easy to multitask w/ something else. This is especially true for meetings, driving (it's hands free and yes, I know some still don't like it), dinner, etc.

Multitasking does cause problems, I'm absolutely aware of that. It probably is better to concentrate on one thing at a time. I also understand that some people find texting rude. In an ideal world, moving at a slower pace would work. However, today's job market is highly competitive. Employees are expected to work far over 40 hours a week and have to juggle enormous amounts of stress and pressure. Everything needed done yesterday, and if you can't do it, another employee will. Of course, this just might lead you to the unemployment office. Often, the only way to get everything done is to multitask, hence, sending out reminders via text messaging during a meeting. In my world, texting is the norm, so I don't find it rude.

3. Texting is the least offensive means of communication. Using a cell phone in a restaurant, a department store, or anywhere in public, ruffles feathers. People complain that you aren't paying attn to what you're doing and are therefore a hazard. Or, you're talking to loud and are inconsiderate. Texting is my compromise. At least it doesn't make noise. And yes, I could stay at home or work until I finished everything I needed to do, but issues always crop up at anytime of day (a witness bails, a law is overturned, etc.) and I need that info. immediately. Also, if I waited until everything was finished, Jas and I would starve to death.

Additionally, Jason and I work in the evenings in the war room. I'll usually text (it's synced w/ email) so I don't interrupt him w/ a phone convo. If I get up and leave the room, he usually comes w/ me unless it's a restroom break. Texting is just easier b/c I don't want to interrupt his thoughts.

4. Texting provides the immediate response that our society is now used to having. The internet definitely changed how we communicate and now, it's expected that it will be instantaneous. Admittedly, I'm a workaholic and am just as impatient as everyone else. I like the immediate response too.

5. Texting allows me to communicate w/ people that I don't really like but still have to deal w/. This one is self explanatory.

Those reasons pretty much sum it up for me.

I dislike and have no patience for pointless texting. I cringe at "I'm bored." And, I spit fire at the asinine text forwards. I let the offender know it bugs me, and it usually stops

Never did any texting until I got a touch screen phone with the full keyboard. I probably have just as many, if not more voice calls than texts.

There are a few I know that are incapable of short conversations. I prefer to text them just so I don't get bogged down in meaningless dribble when all I need to do is relay some information about something.

I do not even own a cell phone. So I do not text and I do not think I would if I did. I find it much simpler to call someone and get the information I need. I do not have a problem with texting, text all you want, just do not text me because I will not text you back. The problem I do have is how cell phones are completely taking over and people who can't put them down. I was out with a few friends the other night for dinner and two of them were constantly texting or reading texts on there cell phones not just during dinner but also afterwards when we went out for drinks.

I do not know call me crazy but when I go out to a social event I do so, to see people and to socialize and unless there is an emergency I tend to forget about the other things and people in my life for the evening. I find that more and more cell phones are becoming a big intrusions into peoples lives, well I guess it is not the cellphone itself but the people with cell phones who just can not put them down.

THANK YOU ALPHA. And you are definately right about twitter. I have never joined twitter and I never will.

But you summarized both the good and bad points about texting without the fun and annoying ranting that we all do and it doesn't sound biased :D

However. Texting and calls can be invasive. Regardless of their intention. Emails are less invasive. But since you can mute the phone or turn it off than that's a bit different. And a text is just a little "boop"

Just a minute...I'll text you! lol!

I agree that it is often much easier just to pick up the phone and hit the "speed dial" that I usually have the person set to and talk. Because I travel, I often have a suitcase in one hand and it is hard as hell to text!

Or if I'm home and wanking it...ever try to get lube off those little text keys on the Pearl Blackberry (not to mention the Pearl does not like lube!)

I hate talking to someone over the phone, always have.

I think it's because people have trouble understanding what I'm saying half the time... with sms they always understand.

notice how quiet I am?
Oh Alpha ! you're just a kid yourself......
Now all of you - get the fuck off my lawn - and stay off !! Use the fucking sidewalk on the other side of the street dammit !! :grrr::grrr:

Excuses are like assholes - everybody's got one !

I'm not saying a fucking word - not one !! THE END !! (okay that's 2 words)

Ok--what really pisses me off about texting is when I make the effort to go out and meet someone for dinner or a drink and they text the whole time. I had one guy do that to me and I assumed he just was not interested in me. But no, after lunch he was all over me and expected me to feel the same. The guy messages me once in a while---and no, I am not going out with him again.

That's the whole thing right there, really. I can remember when 'Call Waiting' became available on regular land-line telephones. I'd be talking to someone and I'd hear their phone beep and they'd put me on hold so they could talk to someone else.

I know it frustrated me to no end (I usually just hung up the phone on them) and I know it frustrated a lot of other people as well. Now it seems that the whole world is 'on hold' 24/7.

Nobody really exists except for those words on the screen.

Unfortunately Alley some guys are like that. And what if it was someone calling someone else while you two were at dinner.

Calling someone or texting when you are with someone the whole time is rude. And texting isn't to blame for that it's the person.

And yes there are some people who will completely ignore you or be rude to you and call you or text you later and than ask for some.

But oddly enough there are people who like that. Why else would they keep doing something like that.

I text daily.. without fail!

Come to England and I bet you find 9/10 people text more than call.. It's a way of life, haha.

..| :luv:

I use Texting for real reason, Since i am deaf and cannot talk on the phone, i use my phone to talk to my friends and family. most of deaf people use cell to txt.

But that is a genuine reason for texting. It's really the only form of distance communication you and other deaf people have available to you.

I still remember the old TTY systems. I've actually used one of these. My friend had it in his house:

(I can't believe I actually remembered that!)

ITT : Old people Vs. Young people

Ridiculous, get over it, it's convenient.
You don't like convenience fuckin leave your car and phone home tomorrow.
While your at it move into the woods and go hunt for dinner, but don't use a weapon it's too convenient and may decrease your abilities as a human.
Fast paced world - Texting fits in fine.

I wish you diddn't delete that. I read it and liked it. Thank you for leaving it up for a few seconds :)

Your post doesn't give any of us much hope.

I think that anyone who grew up with instant messenger or something like that is predisposed to texting.
