Thad's Hockey Corner

I saw the New Jersey Devils' game Monday at Prudential Center in Newark. They shut out the Utah Hockey Club, 3-0. It was Utah's first visit to New Jersey.

Both teams played their "backup" goalies, and Jake Allen of the Devils did the job!

Next week I'll see the Flyers host the Washington Capitals. I'm watching the Flyers on TV now and they're leading the Oilers because of two goals by Matiev Michkov. Remember I told you about him first.

20241022_172424.jpgI went to the Flyers game last night vs. the Washington Capitals. It wasn't good for the Flyers. They gave up TWO shorthanded goals in the first period. Honestly, the Flyers power play was the worst I've ever seen. Finally 4-1, Caps.

Last night was the night all 32 NHL teams played. The Flyers game was first...the others followed at staggered times. I got home to see the final game, Los Angeles at Vegas, on TV. The Golden Knights looked awesome. I will see the Capitals in Las Vegas next month and that could be quite a match.

Oops! I'm not going to Las Vegas.

I DID see the Nashville Predators beat the Columbus Blue Jackets at home. And last night I saw a defensive battle as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the St. Louis Blues, 2-1. Both goalies, Ersson for the Flyers and Binnington for the Blues, were superb.

I'm still going to Utah to see Utah Hockey Club play Carolina.

Wednesday night Utah came alive in the third period to beat Carolina, 4-1.
Delta Center is a good arena. The black seats are dramatic. Philips Arena (now State Fsrm Arena) in Atlanta had them too. They're drawing well.20241113_183007.jpg

The seats are mostly empty and I can see that each team is on only one side of the ice. I was going to ask if that was before the game started. Then I saw that most of each team was on the ice at one time as well, and I pretty well answered my own question. Thanks for the picture.

Yes, that was the pre-game skate. Delta Center has been around since the 1992 Olympics, when it hosted figure skating and short-track speed skating. It's been home to Utah Jazz basketball since.

I'm going to see the Carolina Hurricanes again...this time in Philadelphia, this Wednesday. Exactly one week after seeing them lose in Utah!

Well, isn't that interesting.
Another 4-1 game with Carolina...but this time, they beat the Philadelphia Flyers.
Like last week, the game was tied 1-1 after two periods. But this time Carolina scored 3 goals in the third period. Last week they gave up three goals in the third period.

Monday I went to Newark to see the New Jerseu Devils play the Nashville Predators.
Filip Forsberg scored first for Nashville. But the Devils tied it up quickly. Devils captain Nico His chief scored a "natural" hat trick...three goals in a row. Late in the game the Devils were hit with a 5-minute major penalty and killed it off, making it look pretty easy.
The final was 5-2.
The Devils are having a very good season. The Predators, despite three big-name additions in the off season, are struggling.

Next for me, a trip to Washington to see the Capitals play the San Jose Sharks for Pride Night Dec. 3.

I've been watching lots of hockey on TV. For a week I enjoyed a free trial of NHL Center Ice and saw games from everywhere...but that didn't last and is quite expensive regularly.

I do watch the local Philadelphia Flyers on TV regularly. They beat Florida Monday and lost to Columbus in a shootout Tuesday. The Flyers are an exciting young team. Their goaltending was iffy but is showing good signs of ability.

Pride Night at the Flyers is Jan. 21, vs. Detroit. I'm going. Right now Detroit is on a winning streak and if it continues through next week this could be good.

Inside too.

There was a "Pride Zone" with vendors and organizations in a food court area.
The Flyers beat Detroit, 2-1 in overtime.

At the end of January, I went to Toronto to see the Maple Leafs at home at Scotiabank Arena. Minnesota beat them, 3-1.
I saw the Leafs years ago at Maple Leaf Gardens, so of course I revisited the site. The building is still there, but now houses the Mattany Athletic Center of Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). Oh...and a Loblaws supermarket.
The new arena:

I've been watching way too much hockey on TV. My cable company is giving me a free trial of NHL Center Ice, so I've been watching games from all over. Plus there's a triple-header on TNT today - just saw the Penguins lose to Toronto in OT.

BUT I am seeing hockey in person, Tuesday, when the Calgary Flames come to Phikadelphia.

I've been binge-watching the playoffs. Lots of exciting action. I'm really hoping the LA Kings and Dallas Stars can pull off wins tonight.

The East is all set, with Washington vs. Carolina and Toronto vs. Florida going in round 2. I'd like Washington and Florida to win. But I don't often get what I want.

Playoff tickets are expensive, and teams remaining would all involve some travel fir me...so it'll be TV viewing for me from now on.

Edmonton is certainly less physical than Florida, but they score as much as anyone. I thought Hyman's loss would be a bigger deal because he is the closest thing they have to a physical player to counteract Florida a bit. Skinner has been a surprise. He struggled a lot most of the second half of the season and he magically found it just when they needed it. No one would have expected that going into the playoffs.

I'm rooting for Florida, mostly because of Bobrovsky. But also Barkov, Verhaeghe, Bennett, and Seth Jones.
Isn't it kinda crazy the way the Panthers get things done? My fantasy hockey pals hate them.

Not everyone is cutting back on support for Pride.
