Thank you America...Thank you...

seems to me he got the point you missed

You know, somebody paid for your partner's care.

Apparently it was neither you nor your partner.

So much for self sufficient.

And hopefully your partner won't get diagnosed with cancer or a chronic illness because the ER isn't equipped to handle that kind of thing.

Actually, as a taxpayer, I sort of liked the symmetry of my taxes going to help someone I love.

your taxes?

is that what you think?

one of the reason healthcare costs are out of control is because when you go there you arent just paying YOUR bill, you are paying the hospital, a business, for not only your bill but a percentage of its operating costs it acrues do to other people NOT paying their bills....

that means that the people that pay their bills paid your partners medical fees

not you and not your taxes

even if you went to a charity institution it would be the same way

if you do not have medicaire or medicaid there is no other means for your TAXES to pay that bill

so they mark up someone elses medicare payment and that person pays your bill

you HAVe to knwo all of this, Right?

According to pure Objectivist Philosophy, government has only three legitimate functions:

1. to provide a standing army to protect us from enemies without;
2. to provide a police force to protect us from enemies within;
3. to provide a system of courts so that we may seek redress with each other.

Period.

That's not Objectivist Philosophy, that's fascism. A government should'nt be so one-sided towards militarism and not take care of it's people. IMO any government has an obligation to ensure that it's people can progress within a stable economic environment plus provide a sort of 'base' or financial cushion so that people have something to fall back on in hard times.

Opps that sounds to socialist, scratch that; If people can't help themselves then they can starve and rot. Sounds about right.

Charity is always a good thing, it shows that people are caring for one another and it's great that it's increasing. But have you realised that maybe charity contributions are rising is because there are alot MORE people that are in dire financial debt. Hello people are losing their jobs in the manufacturing industry due to outsourcing, losing health benefits, and paying more for food. And the fact that without charity, there's few alternatives for someone to get on their feet and move away from that poverty line.

Charity helps but if you really believe in the "people should help themselves" mindset, then is'nt charity going against that? And don't you think that most of the people who accept charity want to someday not have to depend on that charity to make ends meet? things that make you go hmmmmm...

I speak from personal experience. My partner is medically indigent - no insurance, and no funds. Twice in the past decade I have taken him to the ER while he was passing kidney stones. He received execellent care, and follow-up clinical care was available. This was in a city of about 500,000 population.

In many, if not all, states, ER facilities are forbidden to turn people away.

Isn't that exactly what I said? The point is that for too many people, it isn't enough.

There's no reason why everyone, who's medically indigent, shouldn't get the same medical care as you say your partner did. But, here's a newsflash for you, they don't.

Your arbitrary theories about the role of government blinker you from basic human empathy and compassion on this issue. You and your partner are ok, Jack, so fuck everyone else who isn't as lucky or as rich.

As a society, I think we can do better than that, especially if other countries, and even our own Medicare system, have shown that it can be done.

The absurdity of this comment has already been addressed by Andreus.

What hasn't been discussed is why your government denies legal status to you and your life partner. If you seek symmetry in taxation, why not seek symmetry in employer/employee insurance plans also? The Republican Party works vigorously to keep your 'family' from achieving legal equality. Why any gay person/family votes to keep them in power has always been a mystery to me.

In other words, your basic welfare state.

If you hate it so much, leave -- find another country. And yes, I do have brochures on life in lovely, laissez-faire North Korea, just PM me for details (free one-way ticket included).

How typical of the anti-America crowd.

^^ Before you leave for North Korea Henry, how about answering the questions posed to you .... minus the Limbaugh/Hannity Repugnut talking points. Who knows .... you just might succeed in converting a few of us to your point of view.

I'll hold a seat for you, just in case you come to your so-called "senses," Comrade America Hater.

There is nothing quite so pathetic as a broken down old liberal. The collapse of the soviet union exposed the moral bankruptcy of your belief system, and you just cannot quite get over it.

Trying to fix things that have broken down in the US doesn't mean that you want a welfare state or have a Soviet belief system.

You're so tied up in your own simplistic political ideology that it blinds you to the real issues that confront many of your fellow citizens. That's exactly what the Soviets used to do.

And still finding reds under the bed. How's that rotary dial phone working for you? Troll, troll, troll.
