And to be quite honest, and maybe someone can explain this to me, but I don't understand vegetarians. Why is it that eating meat is bad but eating cheese and drinking milk is fine. Especially with the process of getting milk from the cows. I mean, from what I hear, it's completely disgusting. I can't drink anything but skim milk without being reminded of blood and puss. But I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan so I guess I'm pretty ignorant about it all.

I've heard of different kinds of vegans, some will not eat any animal or products from animals, some won't eat meat, but will consume products from animals (milk, cheese, etc.) I don't know much about being vegan, but know it's not just black and white.

Plus apparently being vegan gives you awesome powers.

If you eat cheese and milk you are not a vegan. Vegetarian, maybe. But not a vegan.

No. Vegans, by definition, do not eat ANY animal products. So no meat, no poultry, no fish, no dairy, no cheese, no eggs, etc.

All vegans are vegetarian, but most vegetarians are not vegans. You could say that veganism is the strictest form of vegetarianism.

Some people call themselves vegetarian but WILL eat fish, dairy products and eggs (while avoiding meat & poultry).

The most common form of vegeterians are "Lacto-ovo vegetarians." Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat or poultry or fish, but WILL consume dairy, dairy products, eggs, and egg products.

Well a lot of people in U.S. & Europe who go vegetarian do it for health reasons, often also for dieting.

I can tell you why a lot of Indians (Hindus in particular, perhaps also Buddhists) are vegetarian.

The concept is that if you eat meat, you are killing another living creature (such as a chicken, pig, cow, fish, lamb, turkey, etc). If you eat grains, vegetables and fruits, you generally don't have to kill the plant to harvest the food it provides. Similarly, to get milk, you don't have to kill the cow. The cow is considered special or sacred to most Indians because of it's symbolic nature of a "mother-like" creature that produces milk, which we use. Therefore, to slaughter such a peaceful, "mother-like" creature is considered morally abhorrent to most Hindus & Indians.

I find your stories hard to believe as well. Why keep repeating what famous streets you were on when it has nothing to do with the story?

And sissy = vegetables? If you are a real person you're a moron.

Why shouldn't I mention where I was? It happened in West Hollywood, when some random dude tried to lecture me about vegetarianism. When he did that, I was like 1) it's none of your business what I choose to eat, and 2) I probably know more about vegetarianism than he did. So I didn't appreciate him confronting me like that.

And yes, if you talk to most red-blooded American men from "Middle America," yes they will probably believe that "manly = carnivore" and "sissy = vegetables."

Soilwork, why not just say "no, thank you."

Try that some time.

People get VERY offended when you won't eat their treats. They don't seem to get that it's not a "nice" thing to shove junk food at people.

Well I think, "I'm vegan, I don't eat that" is a hell of a lot better than "I'm vegan, I can't eat that." I hate that. People should not pretend their choices are outside of their control. Muslims can eat bacon. I can eat brussels sprouts. PETA members can eat veal. But whatever your deal is, you don't have to eat any of those things, so own the choice. We don't eat them.

Unless you go anaphylactic when you touch a pomegranate or something, in which case you can legitimately say you "can't eat" something.

But if it is always a boring conversation, why even bring up the vegan thing?

"No thank you" gets to the point, and works really well for people like me who don't give a shit why somebody doesn't want to eat my Bacon Wellington. I offer to be polite and I'm not offended if you aren't interested.

just one piece of bacon???? go on...just one little piece... it's WAFFER THIN!!!!

Seriously? I kind of pictured you toying with people who would get offended like that.

"No thank you. Why? Well if you must know, your food is terrible. It gives me farts that smell like zombie rabbits crawled into my ass to finally die."

I didn't picture you knowing people with such a delicate sense of manners.

Bankside, every longtime vegetarian I know (vegan or otherwise) gets sick after eating meat.

I served beef ravioli to a guest once and he puked. Both our mistake (mine for serving it and his for eating it) but it still happened. Oops!

Another friend of mine ate a hot dog thinking she would be OK but she wasn't. After time they lose the bacteria that allows them to digest it properly. Then they puke and/or have the shits.

Yeah... plays havoc with your system. Much like if I served tabour and humous and tofu to people who aren't used to eating it... they'd get bad farts... the runs... it's not pretty.

I'm really HAPPY to hear that you've gone "vegan"...

My sister and mother have been for years...

My partner and I have never eaten meat in our entire lives...

It CAN be an EXTRAORDINARILY healthy way to live -- just make sure that you know how...

Over the last TWO MONTHS -- I have decided to go ONE STEP FURTHER -- and I am currently 90% RAW!!! ..|

For me -- its to cleanse my blood and lose a few pounds that I've ACCIDENTALLY gained over the last several years...

It makes for a FUN SIGHT over the holidays while I drink my GREEN SMOOTHIES as others are slicing up birds... :rotflmao:

I WILL ADMIT however -- if someone was pushing BEER my way -- I'd have a HARD TIME of saying NO!!!

:):):)

I imagine there are at least as many crazy people in west hollywood as there are steakhouses. I'm pretty sure one of them is a vegan. Have none of you ever been stopped by the random rantings of someone on the street?

Why is it so difficult to believe that for every Fred Phelps out there, there is also the Fred Phelps of vegetables, or the Fred Phelps of car seats, or the Fred Phelps of manilla envelopes.....

Google Wiebo Ludwig someday.

There are more vegan restaurants in West Hollywood than there are steakhouses. Trust me. I don't know what Soilwork was talking about.

Google it if you don't believe me.

Here are some -- Green Leaves, Vegan Glory, California Vegan, O Burger, Tender Greens, and The Flowering Tree.

Do you think the average American suburb or small town in "Middle America" has that many vegan restaurants?

Probably not. But then again, look at West Hollywood and the people who live there. It's mostly trendy gay men who are extremely image and weight conscious. A lot of the gay men weigh less than the straight females who live in WeHo........I'm not joking.

It is what it is, I guess.......
