You should be wary of anything that Limbaugh or Beck says absent a corroborating source. The article you've cited tends to support the notion that the early settlers did not like the socialist setup and dumped it. Maybe not because it didn't work, but because it certainly seemed unfair. But it was a failure, whatever the reason.

What a pile of nonsense.

While the puritans and their descendants may have valued a degree of personal liberty, they were, in fact a highly regulated communal society at the outset. The Quakers and generations of settlers thereafter absolutely understood the nature of collective social structure and government.

They invented it in the US for heaven's sakes.

One of my ancestors was a Puritan and from my own academic studies, I know exactly how they saw the role of the individual, family, community and state in both secular and religious terms.

Many of the United Empire Loyalists, descendants of several generations of pilgrims in New England who fled the US to Canada after the revolution built Upper Canada based on collective, community support. It was just the way farms worked.

One of the things that the most ardent capitalists of today forget is that in the first 200+ years of American settlement, many families had upwards of 10 children. The families actually formed a collective economic and social affinity based on marriages and the production of cheap labour in the home.

Only in the south, where the English realized that it was easier and cheaper to have slaves, did the capitalist ethos lose any meaning or moral relevance.

So for all those who think the pilgrims gave up their community based ideals, just look to the commonwealth states they created, the municipal corporations, etc., etc.

Take a trip to New England and learn how it all worked.

What is it with the hate mongers lately? Anyone who is generous, kind and thinks of others is now a socialist. Anyone who wants to help the poor is now a socialist. Those bastards like to throw that word around a lot lately.

The Salvation Army is socialist. The Red Cross. The Church.

Typical of people like Glen and Rush.... they have theirs and don't give a flying fuck about the commoners. You can call them elitists now.

It's a shame that they don't have the Soviets to pull out as the Boogyman to get the American people in lockstep with their ilk. Now, it's all about Socialism. Lulz! All I can say is, YAY SOCIALISM!

Some of the best ideas in the world come from Socialists. And it's not like Socialism is incompatible with religion; Dorothy Day founded the Catholic Worker, which is just what it sounds like.

Early stages of early socialism will consist of religions as nations begin to socialize and the system of economics/finance begins to secede from society. Over time people will see the truth in front of their face as events and ideas form and change over the course of hundreds of years.
 
Meglomaniac political leaders are greedy.... socialism will never work because somebody has to decide who gets what and the people making decisions will ALWAYS enrich themselves at the expense of the whole.

It is ideally the best way we as a species could live.

Will never happen. There is a reason we have to beat sharing into children.... selfish is the nature of man.

Lol I know I can't stand people grouping Socialism And Communism together. But the two aren't Fascists because fascist thinking is another form of Capitalistic economics with social alterations that exploit the majority based on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Fascists exploit the majority and exploit... hmmm ok I can see why people compare republicans to fascists but the two just don't mix. It's complex to explain.

BTW The soviets weren't socialists either they were Capitalists regardless of what they called themselves. They were State Capitalists, which is far more oppressive then American Capitalism. We Don't need another Soviet Union taking form.

In Capitalism the few Capitalists that exist hire the majority of the public, the laborers that are not Capitalists, and they compete against eachother for survival while the Capitalists collect all the profit for themselves. There's MORE then enough resources to benefit 98% of the globe and fill the world with material items and human needs. How do you compare that with Socialism? By the way, not everyone in Capitalism is a Capitalist, where as everyone in socialism is a socialist and there is no government to control the people nor any money to limit the quality of goods and resources let alone a better standard of living. (Because today's standard of living is disgusting. Most people don't know what a toilet or computer is.)



Who told you that Socialism consists of a distorted system of deciding who gets what? Socialism is the complete opposite... Capitalism is a controlling system which keeps 99% of the globe at the poverty level.

Just Curious of where you acquired your definition of Socialism... And if you are referring to Soviet State Capitalism, your definition is VERY simplistic.
