Diamonds, daisies, snowflakes, That Girl
Chestnuts, rainbows, springtime is That Girl
She's tinsel on a tree-eee
She's everything that every girl should be

Sable, popcorn, white wine, That Girl
Gingham, bluebirds, Broadway is That Girl
She's mine alone but luckily for you
If you find a girl to love, only one girl to love
Then she'll be That Girl, too
That Girl!

The TVLand Channel is showing a That Girl Marathon this weekend. I bought the First Series on DVD last week and have been reliving memories and laughs from 40 years ago. The show aired in 1966 when I was just 9 years old.

Four years before there was Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Richards, there was beautiful Marlo Thomas as THAT GIRL, Ann Marie.

I always thought that Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessell made a perfect couple onscreen. Even as a boy, I thought Ted Bessell was cute.

There was a boy in my class at school that looked like a younger version of him, and I had a crush on him... The puppy loves of childhood...!

Marlo Thomas portrayed Ann Marie a struggling actress who lived in a nice apartment and wore nice clothes than most people could have afforded at the time. In the DVD set, there's a nice commentary by Marlo Thomas and the co-creator Bill Persky where he comments on that fact, and he states that was actually one of the successes of the show. People tuned in to see what she was wearing.

One of the funniest shows I've seen so far is where Donald (Ted Bessell) and Ann go to see Ann's parents for the first time. They plan to stop for a picnic on the way, first. Donald shows up in a suit. "You're not dressed for a picnic!" Ann says. "That's because we're seeing your parents afterwards," Donald replies.

They stop for a picnic where Ann insists that Donald join her in wading in the stream. He takes off his shoes and immediately steps on a bee, hopping on one foot, he falls in a bed of cattails in the stream. Back on the stream bank, she feeds him a chopped liver sandwich with horse-radish. He tells her, "Didn't you know I'm allergic to horse-radish!?" He gets hives and begins coughing. She slaps him on the back and knocks his contacts out. "You never told me you wore contacts!" While looking for them, she steps on one and breaks it.

Unable to find the other and unable to see, he tells her she'll have to drive them back home. They head back to the car where she discovers it's NOT an automatic. "I only know how to drive an automatic." "I'll tell you what," Donald says, 'You push the clutch, and I'll shift..." Well, that doesn't work. They get out of the car, stranded. He says there's a stone in his shoe and when he empties his shoe, his other contact falls out. Now he can see and drive, but he says he has no depth perception and that she will have to tell him how close he is to the edge of the road.

They continue on to her parents' house, but end up getting stuck in a ditch. Donald gets out to push while Ann gives the car "a little gas." Donald is covered in mud and muck. A policeman finally gives them a lift and they arrive at Ann's parents'. Her father looks out and sees: a policeman... Ann... "and a bum!"

And there's the infamous bowling ball episode!

Anyway, here's a few video clips of THAT GIRL!

And THAT GAL!

And THAT GUY!

Lisa as THAT GIRL!

I'm mostly gay, but have always had bisexual feelings. I liked that show and that couple. They were cute together and I never could figure out which one I thought was cuter.

I was in a hotel yesterday morning flipping channels and came across That Girl. As soon as I hit the station, I immediately knew it was That Girl. As a little kid, I loved the show. I was only able to watch about 15 minutes of it before I had to go. I didn't realize they had a marathon going on. Thanks for posting this.

Hi PeTe! Long time no orgy....

"That Girl" was a terific show, and so was "Wonder Woman" on ABC. When "Wonder Woman" moved to CBS, they dropped the World War II theme, updated it to the 1970's, and the show didn't seem as good to me (maybe I just liked the WWII setting.....)

Many years ago, I saw her in a superb play, "Six Degrees of Separation." She was following in the steps of one said Stockard Channing.

What a delightful surprise to see and hear the superb performance she gave - i was most impressed by this serious bout of serious ACTING.

Will Smith was also in the said production, and to this day, i have never figured out why he had been cast in his role. an actor?

She also starred in the critically acclaimed TV special "FREE TO BE...YOU AND ME," a children's film from 1974. One cartoon short was called "William's Doll," sung by Alan Alda. It was meant to teach parents that they shouldn't discourage children from playing with opposite gender type toys. Somehow, I don't think this idea went over so well with parents, especially dads.

"A journey into the endless possibilities of life, rich with positive life enhancing messages about growth and change. In a series of live action and animation, positive messages of self esteem are illustrated through songs, stories and laughter." It starred many famous entertainers from the 1970's.

I guess it was a sign that I was gay since I loved....

I did notice the marathon and recorded the first couple of episodes. They seem to have gone for a generic shortened opening unless it changed in later seasons (no waving at the "Anne Marie" bride in the store window.) I was surprided that "Dr. Leon" was played by Dabney Coleman, and that George Carlin played her agent in the pilot.

Ned,

Thanks for taking us down memory-Lane, yet again!

I am too a fan of That Girl and I was also in love with the guy, of course....and had to find ways to supress my desire by using couch cushions to disguise my response to the fatal attraction; else my parents would be the wiser...

Marlo, just seems to have the knack of the comedy timing; I guess she inherited it from her Dad, Danny Thomas.........which I also watched with admiration when he was on TV......long, long ago!(*8*) (*8*)

It's fun watching for the guest stars. As josher mentioned, there's been Dabney Coleman and George Carlin. I've also seen Ruth Buzzi, Penny Marshall, Regis Philbin, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ethel Merman, Danny Thomas, Jack Cassidy, Teri Garr, Billy De Wolfe, and Bernie Kopell were among the actors who appeared on the show.

Another fun thing to watch for is how the writers always managed to work the phrase " that girl" into the dialogue during the opening of the show.

Here's a photo of Ted Bessell and Marlo Thomas taken shortly before Ted's death in 1996:

Wow! I absolutely LOVE that last photo of them.

I always kind of wished that there would have been a reunion episode so that we could see them together later in life. They were the perfect couple.

Marlo Thomas on the death of Ted Bessell:

"This is a tragedy - I am broken-hearted. He had been perfectly healthy. I spoke to him four days ago; we appeared together as a "Dynamic Duo" at the Emmy's as presenters. We talked about the movie version of That Girl. It would have had us meeting again after 30 years and falling in love again.

"People adored him, and that likability was a huge part of that show. Our show was called That Girl, but we all knew that guy was half the success," Thomas says. "He was a gentle, sensitive, profoundly funny, extraodinarily decent human being. I loved him and will miss him for the rest of my life."

In every movie I've ever seen that starred Will Smith, he seems to be playing a variation of his Fresh Prince of Bel Air persona...

...sort of like playing a violin with one string...
