That's So Gay

I can't stand it. I hear it at least a few times a day. And it's even worse when gay people use it themselves. This reminds me of a conversation I read on my school's DC++ hub a couple weeks ago. Right from my logs:

Girl: she spends season 1 trying to figure out who murdered her best friend
Girl: it's not as teeny-boppery as it may appear through commericals
Super straight guy on my floor: that sounds like the gayest shit ever
Girl: it's decent
Girl: check it out if you want
Girl: sam, is gay a good or bay thing
Girl: you like the show?
Girl: you don't?
Girl: can't really tell with that sentence
Some other guy: (I think he means it sounds bad...)
Super straight guy on my floor: ya
Super straight guy on my floor: ive been having trouble with this inclusive language deal
Girl: oh okay just to be clear then...you think gay is bad...?
Super straight guy on my floor: ya
Girl: okay just making sure i understand what it is you're saying

I thought it was hilarious at the time.
 
I've noticed this stupid trend lately as well. I've really come to hate that phrase even more now. I hope it doesn't stick around long. I need to do what you did and start calling people on the carpet for it. Good work!

damn ppl. lighten up. i think it's hillarioius. it's even funnier when gay guys say it. its been my experience that most ppl saying it don't even associate the saying with homosexuality. it's a pure expression that will pass. and, i think it's hillarious when a guy says it that knows you're gay and realizes they're saying it in front of you. just funny!
 
My brother used it the other day when describing my MP3 Player. "That's gay" Right in front of my parents who know I'm gay.

That's silly. Most likely, vandals could be either gay or straight.

The expression is harmless and not worth getting your knickers in a twist over.
 
I truly do not lyke labels.........especially when identifying people..........as we all know "words" kan and do hurt............and are often meant -2- -B- hurtful by those who use them

Some of our more sensitive peers have chosen instead to write "That's so ghey." So that they don't offend us.

I can't help but think "Bless your hearts, but you've totally missed the point."

Be that as it may, not everyone sees it that way.

Regardless of how you decide to view it, the point is that the word is being used synonymously with stupid or bad.

If you don't mind people thinking/believing (subconsciously?) that YOU are stupid or bad for being gay (ghey?) then good for you.

In my opinion, at this point in time the issue of homosexuality isn't at a place where such a phrase can be used unbiasedly without repercussion.
Ask someone who comes from a small, perhaps traditional/conservative town how hard it is to be gay.

I sometimes do say "that's so retarded" but I'm trying to stop.
As for "that's so stupid" well, stupid people are stupid...

As I have an uncle who has Down's Syndrome I choose not to use such statements. Not to mention the fact that my mother worked in Special Education up until her retirement.

The only time I say "That's gay" is if I'm actually referring to something of a homosexual nature, like my girlfriend's rainbow bag (yes, a lesbian flirted with her while she was wearing it) that while she claims is vintage, I say is pride.
 
Personally, I use it primarily to be facetious. I generally roll my eyes when I hear people use it to be derogatory. Maybe it's because people have used the phrase to refer to me since junior high, so I have a sympathetic nature about it.

And I cringe when I hear the N word, even when black people use it.
 
I had a salesperson say it to me about a deal his company was offering, I said so am I and no thanks. Haven't seen him since and that's fine with me.

Great point! This is exactly why I'm personally offended by it. How are attitudes towards us going to change with this kind of association?
