The 2013 Ashes Series...and beyond

Re: The 2013 Ashes Series.

Well at least the ODI matches were a little more entertaining...

Re: The 2013 Ashes Series.

Hmmm...well, maybe it's time for me to resurrect this thread, seeing as those from Old Blighty have been remarkably quiet.

I won't crow (too early, two nil is a good start but far from decisive as yet) but I will point to my comments in post #12 above...

Re: The 2013 Ashes Series.

Oh well - I may be talking to myself - but three nil it is...that little urn has, theoretically at least, changed hands again.

Great performance by the Aussie players - who are also giving a great deal of credit to Lehmann for that. I have to admit I was pleased to see Stokes get well past the century in the third test - he thoroughly deserved it. Best performance with the bat by any of the English by a country mile. Of course, I was also cheering when Warner, Watson and Bailey were smashing balls all over the park (Bailey equalling Lara's world record over in the process).

I have a feeling the last two tests could be closer tho' - Perhaps Stoke's effort will help - and I'm sure the Poms won't want to go home losing 5 - zip (which is what Clarke will be pushing for).

Even tho' the Ashes are decided, there should still be some very good cricket to come.

Re: The 2013 Ashes Series.

Seems like I am talking to myself - but I will mention that I was very surprised at the fact that Swann decided to chuck in the towel in the middle of a Test Series.

He's had a pretty illustrious career - but that does seem a very strange way, time and manner in which to end it. I wonder if it is an indication of some sort of disharmony within the England Squad? That certainly was an issue with the Aussies before Lehmann was appointed.

Re: The 2013 Ashes Series.

...and now he is seen as having thrown a further spanner in the works with his comment about "some players having their head so far up their own backside" - which many are presuming refer to KP.

Any care to make a prediction on the Boxing Day Test??

As the series has progressed, they have been getting closer - but after a "three nil, Ashes lost" scoreline, it would take brave man to predict an England win. I do wonder if a draw might be on the cards tho'. Of course I would prefer to see Michael Clarke's wish of 5-0 come true, but that could be a fairly tough ask.

Re: The 2013 Ashes Series.

This will seem like blatant Aussie crowing (which, admittedly, it is to some extent) but the latest International Cricket rankings have recently been released - wihich have Australia at #1 for both Test and ODI.

Of course I am happy (and I'm sure the Barmy Army aren't - but will still come up with yet another disparaging and entertaining ditty - they really are quite clever with those).

The real purpose for posting this is not to mock, but to go back to my earlier comments in this thread about how essential it is to have a coach who can understand and bring out the best in his players - and clearly Darren Lehmann has done that - and far more quickly and effectively than I thought would be possible. He really has done a brilliant job in a very short time. I have no doubt about the depth of talent in the Australian ranks and I am ecstatic at the superlative job he has done thus far. It is nice (for me) to be able to think we may be looking at more 'glory days' in the coming seasons - I think our International team is in very good hands under his stewardship.

Question is - will we (Australia) maintain the momentum - and do other cricket fans agree that a coach who can unite players is a determining factor - and if so, for the other cricket nations, who is that likely to be? - Or, if not, 'what' will 'make the difference' in Test and ODI cricket in the next season or two?

Thoughts?

Oh - and please - share SOME opinions - I really am interested!

I thought it was worth resurrecting this thread to report/gloat that England won the fourth test and regained the ashes yesterday. The Australians were all out for 60 in their first innings, which set some sort of record, and never really revovered.

It was well worth the resurrection.(!)(!)(!)
