I used to work in an ABS here in NJ for about 3 years.
It was open 24/7 and I worked the midnite shift.
Whatever you can possibly think of went on behind closed doors in the
booths. As long as the videos were kept playing, we never bothered them.
We also had a little theatre which was quite interesting too.

It's sorta common knowledge around here. I hear about busts on the news occasionally and I see cops sitting next to the store sometimes, but I've never seen a bust or a cop inside. Never had heard about adult bookstores like these. Where I live there are a few magazine shops that carry gay mags. Haven't been to any of them for a sometime but I expect they are still the same layout. The adult section of the place is sectioned off from the rest of the store, not walled off just some sort of railing to set it aside.
I guess the places that are the subject of this thread are in big US or European cities.
