The Average 21-year-old

Yes. I should have been more clear about this. The American 21-year-old.

Back to the banks. It was out-of-state checks that took 2-3 weeks to clear. Here's why:

1. You deposit check in California, drawn on small bank in NY.
2. Teller enters it as a tentative deposit. Surface Mails the physical check to NY. Remember--you had to pay extra for Air Mail. Mail takes 3-5 days to reach NY.
3. Small Bank in NY (NOT the same bank) receives mail. It debits the check out of the check writer's account--that day if they're not busy. If they're very busy, it might take two or three days. Check cancelled.
4. Bank in NY mails the physical check back to California. Another three or four days.
5. Bank in CA receives cancelled check. Teller finally credits account.
6. Add up the days; you can see why it took 2-3 weeks!!

Remember--while banks had in-house computers back then--there was no Internet so that they could communicate with each other.

Hmm, I'm still dubious. I went to college on the opposite side of the country from where my parents lived, and I know their checks didn't take 2 weeks to clear. I would have starved if they had. And there were always ways for banks to communicate with each other -- teletype, etc.

Though I was never victimized by having an account at a bank which did this, I clearly remember that SOME banks would not even *recognize* your DEPOSITED CHECKS (if they were out-of-state) for two weeks. Back in the 1970's when I was paying for stuff, people OFTEN asked me if I could please pay with a cashier's check or a Money Order or Cash, so that they wouldn't have to wait for that two weeks.

I also remember when somebody bounced a check on me, but it didn't bounce until six weeks after I had deposited it. This was around 1990. That sort of delay never made even the slightest sense to me.

Also nobody who I was paying ever complained they had to wait THREE weeks for the bank to recognize the deposited check, but two weeks was common.

The average 21-year-old:
  • Does not remember Reagan, or the Reagan Revolution. - Know of Reagan, and a bit about his conservatives views with Thatcher and Mulroney....
  • Cannot remember the fall of the Berlin Wall. - "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
  • Does not remember the Cold War. - Long live the red revolution!
  • Has only a vague memory of the Gulf War. - That was the first one that only lasted a few months, right?
  • Has never heard of the Yugo. - I certainly hope that's the car...
  • Has never heard of shorthand. - I certainly hope that means writing in a shorter fashion for bigger words.
  • Either writes in cursive very poorly, or not at all. (Some localities don't teach it at all, anymore) - Well, I try to avoid it as it takes me longer to write notes in.
  • Has never been handed assignment papers in Mimeograph; remember the purple ink, that smelled so heavenly? - Ok, this one I don't know.
  • Does not remember a time when ATMs weren't on every street corner. - Yep...
  • Has never seen a record. Some don't even know what a 45 is. - Went through my dad's old collection, not some bad stuff there.
  • Doesn't have the vaguest idea of how to work a typewriter. (chuckle) - Load paper, push the slide thing, type, adjust paper, reslide, repeat.
  • Thinks checks have always taken just a day or two to clear. (Remember out-of-state checks that took 2 to 3 weeks?) - Don't out of state cheques still take two - three weeks? And isn't it spelt cheque?
  • Has never heard of an eight-track tape. - Heard of, and fear it.
  • Has never heard of a slide-rule. - Nope...
Hmmm...Seems I know most of them, and I'm only 19!

Reaper, shorthand was...well, do a Wikipedia search. It was taught in every school until the eighties.

It wasn't taught in my high school or my college.

Out-of-state checks nowadays clear on the very first day in some instances, and in only 2 or three days in all others.

"... in all others ..." No, that's not true. Many banks still place longer holds on out of state checks. Federal rules about that have not changed and some banks take advantage of that.

(I'm not kidding.)

The Gulf War is the one that happened in the mid 90's right???

And, the only things I know about Reagan, the Cold War & the Berlin Wall I know from my history book. Those all happened in the late 70s early 80s????

XYboys: Do you agree with the rest of the stuff?

I've never heard of the Yugo.....

Shorthand???

I haven't had to write in cursive since middle school LOL.....

Mimeograph???

I love my ATM's at 3 in the a.m. LOL...

I've seen a dusty record somewhere in my house that belonged to my parents.....
....actually for Xmas a good friend of mine gave me an actual record of the Breakfast at Tiffany's soundtrack because she knows how much I love that movie so I actually do own one (I just remembered......)

Typewriter??? (Just kidding! I've obviously seen one before but I've never used one)

I've heard of an 8 track but have never actually seen one

Slide-rule???

It is an interesting list and just shows how the world has changed in a short time. Imagine what it will be in another 20?

Minidiscs are obsolete? Oh Lord, now I feel really ancient -- I thought they just came out like 5 minutes ago.

Ya most of that has no bearing on my life. It shouldn't either. There is a difference between knowledge and intelligence, and knowing random historical facts does not make you intelligent.

Not knowing what some of those items on the list are really will not affect me in anyway, unless maybe I'm on jeopardy.

I am 22 to clarify, and just to clear things up those kind of things just irk me. It's like that show where they ask adults questions there kids are learning in 1-5th grade, stuff about presidents and such. As if someone in there 40s is gonna remember stuff that in all honestly matters SO LITTTLE in there life it might as well not exist at all. Than of course they are made out to be stupid because they dont know they information there 9 yr olds are learning.

Once again. Knowledge is NOT intelligence. All the list proves is that is time passes and the older you get more out of touch you become with what really matters, not what HAS mattered in the past.

Sorry btw trying to quit smoking, that might have been excessive.
