The best 25 CD’s of 2008

I'm kinda digging Duffy's Rockferry

So do I. It is a terrific album and just missed being in my top 25, but the single "Mercy" would make my top 25 singles of the year. I am a sucker for British Pop music (Britpop) and 2008 was an exceptional year with a lot of releases from great bands (Oasis, The Verve, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Elbow, British Sea Power, Keane, People in Planes, etc) but the female voice seems to be the trend that is emerging from the other side of the pond recently & Duffy is just 1 recent example. In the last couple of years alone weve gotten Her, Amy Winehouse (God what a wreck of a human being...but what talent), Lily Allen, Adelle, Santogold, Corrine Bailey Rae, Natasha Bedingfield, KT Tunstall and others. And whats great is how varied these voices are in sound & style. Hmm is Fergie a Brit? I'm not 100% sure...I'm not a fan but I guess she counts if she is.

In any event, I don't think there has been an explosion of great British female pop singers to emerge like this since the late sixties when we got Shirley Bassey, Marianne Faithful, Lulu, Petula Clark & my personal Favorite Dusty Springfield. I hope this new appreciation of the female voice

...continues.

lol, I cut myself off there. Hope I didnt keep you guys in too much suspense (WHAT THE FUCK IS HE GOING TO SAY!!).

And yeah, I know I forgot Joss Stone and probably a couple of others.

Solange is to me a better artist, and her life is one that compares to mine so i see myself in solange

Ok Sand, I just read your profile, now how exactly does the life a white bisexual male from Toronto compare to Solange Knowles lol?

You didnt both sleep with the same guy did you (or maybe the same girl)?

Great list Jake. Its funny but the Jesse Malin cd is the only one on your list I havent heard at least a part of even though he is a popular local musical artist here in New York. Covers albums can be very tricky, one of my all time favorite bands (and the band I have seen live most in my life going on 20+ times) Everclear, released a covers cd this year and I was very disappointed in it.

Jake, are you aware of The Cold War Kids? judging by your list I think they would be right up your alley and they released an excellent album this year called "Loyalty to Loyalty" (to follow up their equally excellent debut CD "Robbers & Cowards") which was my 2nd favorite cd this year. If you havent already gotten it I would highly recomend it.

I do like the Cold War Kids, Captain. I liked their new album but really didn't listen to it as much as what's on my list.

AS for the cover albums, you're right, they can be tricky - anyone can put out one good cover but a whole album full, that's another story but Malin is so good he pulls it off.

Nomine, Jesse Malin is a guy. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how good he is. I've liked everything Conor Oberst has done so far; there's really no need for the constant comparisons to Dylan though, I hate when critics do that, let the artist's music stand on it's own.

I just saw The Hold Steady a week and a half ago here in Chicago. Probably the fourth time I've seen them in the last two years - they put on a great live show.

I need to see them live, Ive heard nothing but great things about their live shows. I am seeing Kings Of Leon this Thursday night. Ill give you a report.

so, in the past 2 weeks i've totally fallen in love with Elephant Shell by Tokyo Police Club. if i were making my list now, it would be on there instead of Kings Of Leon.
