The best advice I can give is to take your own advice

Actually the best advice I could probably give is to never listen to what people tell you to do. If they knew they’d be doing it themselves.

But, sometimes, I don't mind sharing what has worked well for me. ;)

Don't be too hard on yourself, there are more than enough motherfuckers out there willing to knock your confidence at every turn.

this is from a 72 yo fart
cut in half credit cards
or the bank will cuff you till you die
I cut mine in 1972 the best move I've made

what advice would you give a person?

I'm not sure how much of this applies to "the States" - but this is the situation in Australia
BUY a home (mortgage), at your earliest opportunity
Don't even THINK about starting a family, until you've done so
Work out a budget plan to OWN it, 100% - before you retire (retirement age is 65 here)

An automatic aged (welfare) pension (only lightly means tested) will bring you in about $550 per week (annually indexed to inflation)
I FULLY own my home - and get by in reasonable comfort on $550 per week, as I have no RENT to pay
I did all the overseas travel I needed to do, when I was younger

I have kept a credit card for essential on-line purchases, for when an essential item is MUCH less expensive
ALWAYS pay your credit cards off, in full, before any interest applies

The only time my guns are sticky is when there is fresh blood on them.

How do you accomplish it?

By getting a grip.

If you ate fresh oranges, or honey, you'd also have a problem. Not sure about blood oranges.
