The Big Bang...

Well, I finally watched an entire episode of Big Bang Theory. It was the Santa Claus D&D episode and I have to admit that it didn't even make me crack a smile. I don't understand its appeal.

I think it is the fantasy of the mildly nerdy straight population that they are even more nerdy, a trope in bar and other popular culture.

It is somewhat of a recurring syndrome in post-Hollywood America (and elsewhere) that people with no particular personality "type" adopt a more exaggerated one mentally (redneck, cowboy, Wall St., gangbanger rapper, hipster) in order to feel connected with either a culture hero or simply part of the times.

Basically, Big Bang Theory is just an appropriation of Cheers, then Friends, with a running gag line of elitist science jokes thrown in as an upwardly mobile attractant. In the end, it is still a show about 20-somethings living in shared housing, trying to get laid, or putting up with those who do. It's practically a Vaudevillian trope.
