Francis Scott Key was a lawyer in Baltimore. The colonies were engaged in vicious conflict with the mother country, Britain.

In 1814, England hadn't been the mother country to the U.S. since the War of Independence, more than 30 years before.

By 1814, the colonies were not the U.S. They were Newfoundland and in Canada, and they never fought England.
