I changed years ago because of work. The older MAC OS's had a lot or problems -- but when OSX appeared . . . . everything changed.

I would never go back. Life is so much more productive on a MAC.

I like both Windows and Apple but currently I'm using a PC and BF is using a Mac he just bought a new laptop he had a Powerbook so he changed to a newer laptop.

I can't recommend an Apple enough. There is a transition period where you need to get used to the new interface, but its about a week, and from then everything you do is simple. Its streamlined, and all at the touch of a button. It rarely crashes, is near impossible to pick up a virus, and maintains its running speed for much longer than a PC. I'm sure there are downsides, and maybe I've just been lucky, but I've had a Macbook for two years, and couldn't be happier. Still discovering new things about it every day.

I have Macbook and have never looked back. They're amazing, and the operating system is great. Highly recommended.

Hotswimmr, what are some of your uses for a computer? It might be easier to address stuff if we know what will be relevant to your decision. There's reasons to say yes or no to Windows or Mac, depending on your needs.

I'm playing around with Linux, you should try that. It's free.

I too have been toying around with linux. I like option 3. I did switch to a Mac, and it had been my primary computer for the past couple of years now. It has its advantages, but there were some things that I needed and still have to get used to.

Sounds like Mac OS will be just perfect for your needs. iPhoto and iMovie are great and powerful tools included with the OS, but your photography needs are probably better served by Apple Aperture, fast becoming the pro photographer's standard for photographic adjustment and cataloging.

The great bonus with Mac hardware is the ability to install other OSs, like Windows or Linux, if required.

You know .. this IS a universal bonus. BUT apple on purpose prevents you from installing their OS on other hardware. Sometimes I wish MS would do the same and the Linux guys as well (although that would be impossible since it is open source). However if you want to you can install MacOS on certain hardware as well (so called "Hackintosh").
Oh AND this is only possible since Apple decided that there especially developed hardware is too expensive and they can move onto the intel platform to save a bunch of money - and sell the hardware for the same price.

I've had both.

How anyone could not choose Apple, after experiencing both, is beyond me...

I converted to Mac 3 years ago. I also have windows xp on my macs for those annoying work related apps that were only written for windows. I am notorious at work for starting to swear almost as soon as I start windows, this gets worse and worse the longer I stay on it until finally I close it down with a huge sigh of relief.

Apart from routine usage, which is to say web surfing, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and so forth, my most rigorous application will be photography. I'm an advanced amateur photographer who shoots an average of 1000+ exposures a month using professional DSLR equipment. I would be using the computer, at very least, for sorting and viewing, editing, printing, deploying (web), and archiving my photography. I would also like to dabble a little in video editing - nothing exotic there, though - mostly web-grade stuff.

Media has always been one of Apple's largest strengths. Some great apps and tools for things like this.

I can only comment on video editing programs. Lots of people will disagree with me but, I hate Final Cut. Adobe Premiere is much easier to use. There are lots of useful tools that Final Cut requires you to turn on, that are just already on with Adobe. There are more creative tools and the CG program is way better. I used to use Media 100 and like it better than Final Cut.

I started with an iPod..then moved to the iPhone..and now I have been using a MacBook Pro for about a year and haven't looked back. I still use a PC at work but I find the transition back and forth to be fairly easy.

Enough of Windows vs Mac vs Linux vs Microsoft vs Apple debates, the arguements fore and against are old and tiresome.

I agree with DonJohn64 and Mike_n_herrin.

One option is missing in your poll, mr hotswmmr: I've always been a Mac user, I'm proud of it, and will never go to the Windows persuasion!

Well, may I ask for another option: "I've always been a Windows user, I'm proud of it, and will never go to the Mac persuasion!"?
