"The Collapse of the American Empire?"

aE21LmO_460s.jpg

I see where this is going...

This thread reminds me of growing up around people that hated and resented success. If someone bought a new car or home talk of repossession or fore closer followed. I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but America is not dead yet. Don't get your hopes up. Sure we will follow history, all great civilizations have gone in to demise. Of course, you have to reach that state of greatness for others to notice and hope for your fall.

Re: "he Collapse of the American Empire?"

The other theory for the almost orchestrated decline and fall is that the US government is now firmly in the control of Dominionists and nihilist 'christians' who seriously believe that we are in the End Times prophesied in the New Testament. For them, there is no reason to care about the future of the planet, the future of the government or the future of humankind. It is all about the Elect and the Damned and making everything ready for the Second Coming. As nuts as this seems....it is the core belief of way too many conservatives in the American government today...including Pence.

Indeed, religion is currently the root of all that is wrong in this world. Nearly every geopolitical conflict could be solved if we took religion out of the equation. Which is why we must all stand up for atheists and secularists, especially for those living in theocracies. They are the ones who can save this world.

The salvation of America and possibly the whole world will be atheism or a return to secularism. If we can all hold out that long.

We will manage to hold out that long. Two new things set this century resolutely apart from the previous one: the internet and the cell phone. The combination of the two, smartphones with mobile internet, have been around for just a few years in many places, and look at the impact they have had already. The internet is where religions die. Think of all the information that was previously inaccessible to people in Iran or Libya or Pakistan, and now it is. And that's just in English. Think of all this information now being translated into Persian, Arabic and Urdu. Think of all this information being enriched by local perspectives. Our parents talk about the revolutions of 1989. What's round the corner will be much bigger still.

Re: "he Collapse of the American Empire?"

I'm from Europe, Home of Fallen Empires, we always say things like this just before we're entered as a side note in history books...

Indeed. In 1914, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland comfortably ruled over the largest empire in the history of the world. All it took for this to disappear was two wars in a thirty-year period. And they didn't notice it until it was too late. Their empire did not reach its greatest size until the 1930s, but by then the rot had already set in. They were stretching resources, losing legitimacy, and had already lost the Irish Free State.

The USA has no reason to believe it cannot go down the same path. They are fighting in Iraq, they are fighting in Afganistan, they are fighting in Syria, and they are ready to start fighting in Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan and a host of other countries. If it were up to Trump he'd probably invade China and Russia on a whim. But the wars that reduce America to has-been status may have already started, even as their superpower status seems to be consolidated more every day.

Back on topic. I feel better after that musical break.

I am one who doesn't want to throw out the good of religion (charity, family, brotherhood) with the bad (bigotry, narrow-mindedness, dogmatism).

I agree AND disagree with you! I notice the rise of Islam, or at least Islamic garb, in urban Philadelphia and it puzzles me (although I'm not distressed and don't feel threatened). I wonder how and why.

My home Methodist church closed, to be replaced by some kind of cult.

And isn't that chalkboard misogynistic?

Be careful what you wish for. You'll miss us when we're gone.

The difference between the good and the bad is that the good isn't exclusive to religion while the bad is. You can love your family, respect your neighbours and help random strangers without being religious. But virtually all the sexism and homophobia I've ever encountered came straight from the pulpit or minbar.

So I will happily throw out both. Love and charity are older than all religions and will outlast all of them as well.
