Chapter 784 - D
“Really, Doc?” I questioned. “Did you have to get so graphic? Isn’t that kind of desperate?” I asked. Doc smiled.
“Sometimes you just have to say it like it is. I didn’t use the ‘F’ word at least,” Doc replied.
“Hey, I’m having a hell of a lot of fun with all this true confession shit, but I have a meeting with a very expensive attorney in about a half-hour and I really need to run. I’ve enjoyed this enlightening lively conversation but I have to get back to business,” I told them as I got up, noting the time.
“You have a very fragile friend here, Josh, and I can’t overstate that enough. You need to protect him at all costs even if you have to intervene somehow. Call me if you need help in that area as you have my numbers to contact me 24 hours a day any day of the week. Rowen, I can’t warn you enough about what you’re trying to do. You have to take it easy and slow or things could blow up in your face and hurt you for life. I know Josh will do what he can to protect you, but you have to help yourself also. I can’t emphasize that enough,” Doc said then hugged Rowen. “Please be careful, and thanks for being so honest today,” Doc told him. I held out my arms to hug him also. “Watch the hands,” Doc said as he hugged me tightly, our cheeks up against one another.
“Thanks, Doc. I know what you said today and I heartily agree. I will watch this closely and protect Rowen as much as I can, but we both know the heart wants what the heart wants,” I commented.
“Yes, but the heart doesn’t always get what it wants. The outcome of that sometimes can be devastating when the heart gets broken. Take care of Rowen, Josh. I know you know how to as I’ve seen that many times from you. I want both of you back here in two weeks. Don’t be late,” Doc said, then opened the door for us to leave.
“We need to talk tonight for sure,” I told Rowen. Rowen said whatever we needed to do he was open to. I gave him a heartfelt hug, and patted him on his sore ass, then told him to tell Lucky hi for me, but I might not see him until we took him home tomorrow. Rowen reminded me we needed to get him some clothes to go home in. I told Rowen we’d pick those up in the morning before we went to the hospital. He said that would work.
I hurried back to the office building and stopped on the 7th floor to pick up Cal. I got a hug from him then we headed up one floor to my office suite. We decided to meet in Jordan and Nate’s conference room where stains on the carpet told stories we didn’t want known. I couldn’t help but notice that every time I walked in that conference room. I guess I just missed Baxter when I came in as Jordan must have gone to get him as I was bringing Cal up. When Jordan finally arrived with Baxter, looking very serious as he always did, he was not by himself. He introduced his young assistant counsel as Swain. Both were dressed in suits and ties as if they were ready to go to court to try a case. We all introduced ourselves then sat down at the table. Baxter said we had to stop meeting like this, although he did appreciate the business. He told us Swain, who was looking hot to me, would be assisting him in handling Kenny’s case. Both took out legal pads and were prepared to take notes.
“Good to see you again, Swain. It’s been a while,” Jordan said to Swain who gave us a big smile. “Swain and I went to law school together back in the day. Didn’t expect to see you here in Uni, but then you never know when you’ll run into a fellow law student again,” Jordan told him.
You two know each other then, I take it?” Baxter asked. Jordan had a big smile. “I was fortunate to entice Swain to join our firm, seeing as his fiancé lives here in Uni. He was looking for a legal opportunity in the area and since I lost Jordan to you guys, Swain was available and came highly recommended,” Baxter explained.
“Well, welcome to Uni, Swain. Baxter is one of the best in the field of defense. He’s a damn good attorney and I truly valued the time I served under him at the firm. He’s a great teacher and I know you’ll learn a lot from him. Fiancé, huh? Well congratulations. I’ll have to meet the pretty lady sometime. We must all have a drink sometime and catch up,” Jordan told Swain, who looked somewhat embarrassed, but was holding his own.
“Great to see you again too, Jordan. I was shocked to hear you were the one I was replacing working for Baxter. Guess what goes around comes around to a certain extent. Would love to catch up with you sometime. I guess we’ll be working on this case together anyway so we’ll have plenty of time to catch up,” Swain replied. Jordan told him, ‘that, we will’.
“Okay, gentlemen, now that we have all the familiarities out of the way, I want to start with everything law enforcement knows about Kenny. Cal, I guess you’d be the best one to give us the information on him, the laws he’s broken and all illegal acts the FBI knows about his criminal history,” Baxter asked. Cal proceeded to tell him everything we knew about Kenny, how he was in charge of the distribution of drugs for the W&S crime family, distributed drugs to various distribution locations, collected the funds, then dropped them off to be transported to Chicago to be laundered. “Has the DEA charged him with anything that you know of?” Baxter asked. Cal told him the state AG’s office and local DA was taking a look at it, and did think charges would be brought at some point. He was hoping that the level of assistance that Kenny gave us, breaking the case wide open, and identifying all targets that had to be addressed for a system wide takedown, not to mention putting himself in harm’s way, taking multiple gunshot wounds that nearly killed him to save the life of a police officer involved in the raid on W&S headquarters, would justify some kind of clemency for his previous actions. Baxter and Swain were taking copious notes. “Make sure you forward any criminal charges the DA’s plan to charge to me immediately if you would please,” Baxter looked up from his notes and asked. Cal told him he would certainly see that happened. Baxter then asked Cal the level of assistance Kenny gave the Bureau and other law enforcement agencies that brought the investigation to where it was today after multiple arrests had been made.
“We worked an undercover operation with Clay here who befriended Kenny. Kenny told Clay several times he was involved in something he hated, but knew with utmost certainty he would be killed if he tried to leave or reported the situation to the authorities. Through the course of Clay’s and Kenny’s relationship, Clay convinced Kenny that he could help him escape the clutches of the W&S crime organization. Clay wore a wire and all communication between Clay and Kenny were recorded. Plus all their meetings together at Clay’s apartment were recorded in video and sound,” Cal told them.
“And these were meetings where Clay and Kenny got together to socialize and eventually discuss Kenny’s desire to leave the crime organization and try to free himself? What motivation or assurance did Kenny expect just visiting with Clay that made him think he should risk his life and freedom to leave the organization?” Baxter asked very seriously. Cal looked to Clay.
“We knew from someone that previously knew Kenny, that Kenny was interested in guys sexually. I pretended to be interested in Kenny through an associate of mine at the TV studio that was involved with the prostitution ring we found out later. Shelley is her name and she’s currently in jail, arrested for running a prostitution ring along with our news executive producer Aikens. They both were involved with W&S. Aikens had ties to Dickerson, the previous president of the University. I know you know how Dickerson and Hastings were tied to W&S. So, I began a relationship with Kenny, befriending him and having sex with him in order to gain his trust. The more time I spent with him, the more emotionally involved he became with me, and the more we learned about what was going on. Seeing how he hated what he had to do for W&S and dealing with their two idiot sons, Spence and Simon, I convinced him I had someone to help him exit the business and turn confidential informant. At first he was unsure it was safe, but eventually Cal met with him at my apartment and laid the groundwork for his way out by us taking down the crime organization. We fitted Kenny with a cockring that would transmit conversation and we recorded all his conversations with customers, the principles and the sons. Trust me when I say, it’s some tough stuff to listen to. Through Kenny’s information we were able to take down the whole organization, all their distribution points for their drug business, the prostitution business and the money laundering business through the C&S Bank in Chicago. Needless to say, it was a huge takedown that involved a large part of the state, largely because of Kenny’s information,” Clay explained. Baxter and Swain were busy writing notes as to what Clay shared with them.
“Since Kenny was involved with you, Clay, we’re going to need to see the recordings of your meeting to rule out an entrapment that may have been implied through Clay’s and Kenny’s meetings with one another,” Baxter said.
“I have to warn you, that they are rather graphic in nature just so you know. That was necessary to gain Kenny’s trust to share information with Clay,” Jordan informed Baxter.
“Really, Doc?” I questioned. “Did you have to get so graphic? Isn’t that kind of desperate?” I asked. Doc smiled.
“Sometimes you just have to say it like it is. I didn’t use the ‘F’ word at least,” Doc replied.
