Remember when we talked about TV teachers?

I grew up with ABC News division's "Discovery" series, from 1962 to 1971. At the time it was one of my favorite shows about science, history, art and innovations.

Twelve years ago, I emailed Bill Owen and I thanked him, and Virginia Gibson, for showing kids everywhere that learning lasts a lifetime.
Allow me to spend September 11th showing everyone what passed for children's programming, from ABC News, in 1967.

I'll never forget how overjoyed Bill Owen was to connect with someone who remembered him and the Discovery series. London, Rome, Paris; Discovery was the first children's show to travel around the world, giving kids a glimpse of a world beyond the small screen of a TV set. When the final episode aired in 1971, Discovery had been a fixture in my life for a decade. Sunday midday was never the same, but I still carry the memories of favorite places and stories.

Btw, not all "Discovery" series are created equal.

Never knew about this program.

I would have enjoyed it.

On a personal level, I deal with the pain of 9/11 every year by remembering all the wonderful people who have touched my life.

Hosts Bill Owen and Virginia Gibson, as well as the Discovery series itself, represent a decade in my young life.

It gives me a joy inside that I carry with me, always.
