Has anyone seen this fantastic film? I hadn't even heard about it until Caroline mentioned it to me when we were talking about going to see a movie (which I hadn't done in ages). We went to see it on Saturday, and I was so blown away that I haven't even been able to talk about it!

It's the most visually stunning film I've seen in a long time, perhaps even ever. The costumes, the art-direction, the sets, and the beauty of the actors were all unparalleled... I had better see this movie in the Costume and Art Direction categories come Oscar time. And the plot was so wonderfully twisted up! It was like Shakespeare wrote a Mandarin soap-opera!

It was all filmed in the Forbidden City, which was restored (I expect with a lot of help from CGI) to its Tang Dynasty splendor, which was colorful and grand and utterly glistening with gold and gems; the costumes and jewels were ostentatious, complicated, and glamorous beyond comprehension. The battle scenes (for those as like such things) were utterly amazing, but they couldn't hold a candle to the simplest things, like the Empress walking down the hallway with her retinue, or the Emperor flipping back his sleeves for a fight, or the slaves covering up a battle-ground for the Crysanthemum Festival.

If the movie is playing in your neck of the woods, I totally recommend it; if it's not, keep an eye open for the DVD release, and be sure to play it on a really big screen. It's just amazing.

I plan to see it. I really enjoyed House of Flying Daggers. I actually went to see it twice in the theatre when I was completely broke. I skipped lunch that day.

The thread title attracted my attention.

Golden Flower in Thai is "dok tong". "Dok tong" is a crude slang expression in Thai for a well used, not so tight vagina.

When I read the thread I automatically translated it as "The Curse of the Dok Tong". YuK!

Just thought I would mention this. I hope this does not upset Robert-Marlene's sensibilities.

Yeah, I saw a commercial on television and I really want to see it. Looking at Li Gong, the main star of The Curse of the Golden Flower, she looks like she could play Chun Li. Plus, she's really making moves in the industry. She was in Miami Vice and she's co-starring in the new Hannibal Lecter movie and an upcoming movie with Jim Caviezel. Damn, who knew. Is this The Curse of the Golden Flower in English and subtitled? Look at these pics of Li Gong:

I´ve been following the making, previews, releases, reviews and polemics around that film over the past twelve months... I wonder what the actual product might be

Ew! Hopefully they have an alternate title for Thai release! The golden flower in question is an embroidered chrysanthemum.

It was in Mandarin with English subtitles. Hopefully there will be a dubbed version on the DVD... for though the Mandarin definitely added to the drama and flavor, it was difficult to read with so much visual sumptuousness going on... one didn't know where to look.

And Gong Li was soooooooo gorgeous in this movie! I almost wanted to slap her, and steal all her costumes! (not that they'd fit me, but still)

Saw the movie. fell in love with the movie. Yimou Zhang (the director) is an artist. His work is genius here. I could not help but to keep fallign in love with the movie magic he brought up. Only that the ladies' boobs were way too distracting.

Yimou Zhang is responsible for Jet Li's Hero and The House of Flying Dagger.

I can't wait to see this! I fell in love with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and had my heart broken with Hero and House of Flying Daggers. These films are so beautifully envisioned, and the actors are always amazing. It's so rare these days to find epic stories in American films where actors are called upon to convincingly portray such a wide range of emotions. It's also too rare to leave a film and feel like you've seen a piece of true art and beauty.

I just can't wait.
