The Dangerous and Cruel Unintended consequences of the overhyped opioid crisis.

The desire to keep longboarding while on Hydrocodone seems to indicate a disconnect somewhere along the line.

Not really -- unless you're still learning, longboarding is actually a good form of exercise... so long as you don't wipe out badly, but that's true of bicycling as well.

One of the guys in my former pain management support group was into sailboarding; the doc affirmed that as a good form of exercise if he stayed in shape... and did no flips.

I’m used to hearing similar things, no hard feelings. I know people on medicine that try and stay physical. I even mentioned I can’t use an actual “shortboard” anymore due to movements. Longboarding doesn’t require you to use as much. I can’t go that far for long honestly. There are times it hurts after. This is usually during the summer when my pain is at its least.

If your pain is less in the summer, you should look into light therapy. It's not common, but I and a gal I new both had reduced joint pain when we got lots of sunlight -- which back then was easy since there was a nude beach within a five minute bike ride of the university. :)

This topic covers the very greatest fear I have in life. The fear of having to endure horrific pain, without any meaningful relief. In the USA, doctors are very reluctant to write scripts for pain meds that are actually effective.

I had some pain during late summer 2017 which flirted with "horrific" levels, and I was only "saved" because I had a decent prescription of hydrocodone*** from my DOWNSTATE doctor 260 miles away. But, after getting a primary care physician in CHICAGO in late 2017, the downstate doctor released me from his care because I "can't" have two primary care physicians. [WHAT IN THE HELL DO SNOWBIRDS DO????]

The pain doc here actually had a reciprocity setup with a doc in southern Oregon and one in California for this very reason: they had patients who migrate up and down the west coast with the seasons. Every time one of them was leaving the area, he'd do a referral to the next doc down the line.

The only difficulty was with insurance, which only worked in this case because all three doctors specialized in pain management and treatment.

Im glad Im not alone in realizing this. You really have to be in a situation of agony to understand. Anybody who doesn't feel what we feel will always be biased by what the media is telling them.

How many of you have been called an addict that didn't even know you? Happens to just about every person I know in chronic pain. You get looked DOWN UPON. It gets frustrating.

I got called an addict by an acquaintance who saw my new bottle of oxys. He didn't believe me when I said I try to avoid taking them.

Then he heard from a buddy about how the doc tested me for pain tolerance before getting a new hip; the pain I had from just walking was equivalent to having a steak knife run through one hand and left there while working with that hand. The next time he was by my place he saw my pill bottle and read the label -- it was the same one he'd seen new, and he could easily see I wasn't even taking one a day.

I only once had an issue with wanting them, after one day in the summer when I wiped out riding in the dunes and needed two just to be able to get back to my truck and drive home. A few days later when hiking I decided I was grinding my teeth too much so I went to take one and found myself really, really wanting to make it two. So I went home and gave my bottle to my buddy, with instructions to allow me only one at a time for a month. I really don't understand people who want to take more than necessary; the idea that some substance could have that kind of power terrifies me -- I'd rather have a clear mind with the pain than be mentally fuzzy without.

1. Happy to see you it’s been a long time. I remember our debates over capitalism lol. Missed you.

2. I’m happy to hear you recognized the addictive potential properties and did the responsible thing. I know some people who have someone dispense it to them that truly need it. I keep it in a locked safe after I’ve taken ibpurophen, turmeric, and marijuana. I keep it in my mind as a last resort.

3. How is your pain now? A hip replacement doesn’t sound fun at all

This is a self solving problem but we keep saving the pillar of society drug addicts. Let them od and die, stop saving them before we have to face major operations and pain in this country with no pain killers because we may get addicted. These are weak people who are trying to remove themselves so let them.

New CDC Data on Opioid Deaths Shows Limiting Prescriptions Isn't Working

Drug companies are backdooring narcotics that they are manufacturing off book. Why sell to a pharmacy or a distributor when you can sell to a dealer for 10 times the profit. I just wish they would do something about it rather than blame people with pain for selling theirs.

And stop saving people that od repeatedly, let them go and soon we run out of drug addicts and the deaths slow and things can be normal again.

I was on Hydrocodone several years back due to a kidney stone stuck in my ureter. They had to put in a stent and medicate me until an opening for surgery came up. I had the stent in for almost three weeks. I was popping those pills like candy, so yeah, i can see how some do get addicted.

On prescription opiod abuse, again, we have no one to blame but ourselves. I know 3 doctors that you could go to that would give you a prescription for any pain you complained about without any further diagnosis. All 3 finally have their license suspended, and one is in jail.

Its near impossible to even get a prescription in some areas anymore. Drs cut my mother before she died and she had seceral things wrong with her. Peoples opinions on things can vary based on where they live. They didnt give me anything in the ER after my initial injury for accute pain some junk called Tramadol. Took me 6 months of pain to finally get a script to legitimate pain relief for when its at its worst like now in the winter.

Yes drs have abused their power, but the FETYNOL crisis happened when people had their meds cut as people went to the streets out of desperation. Both the people and the government are to blame, not just one entity. Like everything else its becoming a sensitive topic. One you cant understand until you want out of severe pain.

This is not intended as a drive-by, but I've got a rebuilt knee with arthritis it just kills me after climbing, skiing, or stress. If you can bear it, a massage may help. Respect.

I have moderate to severe arthritis so I feel your pain. Knees, hands, wrists and elbows are always hurting on me but I only take over the counter stuff for it. I still hit the range every week and shoot a thousand rounds and that is usually the day I take Aleve and the next day to deal with the pain from it. Also dropping weight to ease the knee pain. Off road motorcycles and ATV riding added greatly to my pain with the constant vibration but my hands are mostly shooting damage.

Like I said stop saving the drug abusers when they od and soon the problem will have solved itself. Then things will ease up for those who need them.

I was doing the Alleve for pain, until it ate a hole in my stomach a few months ago. :( I was told no more NSAIDS.
