1911 was cold. So cold, in fact, that the ice built up above the Falls, choking back the water flowing in from Lake Erie and reducing the falls to a comparative trickle. Niagara Falls actually froze over.

Here are some photos of that remarkable event:

Wow! What stunningly, amazing pics! Thanks for posting them, Neil.

...and there was me thinking that it's been a wee bit nippy here in Bristol for the past few days.

Great pics!

I've been to Niagara Falls several times, however only in the summer. I cannot imagine what it was like back in 1911 in the winter.

I went there about 4 years ago. The Falls are an amazing sight. It's easy to ignore nature in our society. It's great to just stare in awe at what nature is capable of sometimes.

im not a scientist, but, global warming being blamed on humans is ridiculous. i was watching some discovery channel type science show & it claimed a 3 degree F rise in temp was causing glaciers to melt. but the air temp was still less than 32 degree F(which is freezing temp for H2O). to me that says there is some internal earth cycle that is warming from below not a greenhouse effect. we currently believe there was an ice age in the past, isn't possible this is just a normal earth cycle & anything we humans do is fairly insignificant & not responsible for global warming & we are powerless to effect natural cycles. just curious.

Salt water requires a much lower temperature to freeze.

Just for reference, the night the Titanic sank, the people were left to freeze to death in 28º water. Salt water doesn't freeze at the same temperature as fresh.

Yes, it's very much true that the Earth goes through natural warming and cooling trends and even experiences dramatic climate changes from time to time. However, to deny that human interference isn't speeding up this process exponentially is not only foolish, but dangerous.

Watch The Day After Tomorrow. Yes, it's highly dramatized, but the point it proves is very true. If this warming continues, the ice caps will continue to melt, releasing fresh water into the oceans, causing catastrophic desalinization, which would change the currents which help control the climate of the entire planet. It would lead to another ice age.

My palaeoanthropology professor told us in the first year that he used to show the climatic results of the ice caps desalinizing the oceans - but had to withdraw the video from the module because students would get depressed with what they saw  :(

It's hard to imagine all of that turbulent water freezing, but the pictures prove it. Don't be to quick to assume that it can't happen again, even with "global warming".
