Hamm Joins Reeves In Earth

Golden Globe nominee Jon Hamm (AMC's Mad Men) will star opposite Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in the SF remake The Day the Earth Stood Still for Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hamm will play Dr. Granier, a NASA official who recruits Helen (Connelly) for the scientific team investigating an alien's arrival on Earth. Reeves plays Klaatu, the alien who has a simple message: Live in peace or be destroyed.

Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will direct the update of Robert Wise's 1951 classic from a screenplay by David Scarpa.

Principal photography began Dec. 12 in Vancouver, Canada. Hamm started shooting on Dec. 18, the studio told the trade paper.

Hamm is up for a Golden Globe as lead actor in a drama for his role on Mad Men.

Hard to say if they'll screw this up GL.I hope not..i absolutely LOVE the B&W original!!I have to confess i've got 2 copies on dvd..one opened, one still wrapped !oops!

It's where Georgie(Lucas) boy got a few names of some of the characters(Niktu,Klatuu,..) for Star Wars..this is one movie that was a HUGE inspiration for him.
I'm sure you are well aware of this though

okay enough rambling from me.. :-)

Great flick............"Gort, Klaatu barada nikto"

*snaps fingers* Yes, Barada was another one..thanks.

I vividly remember being terrified by the robot scene (in which he opens his "eye" for the female when she confronts him) when I was a boy.

They damn well better do this one well!

Why why why? Those two are two-bit, second-raters who couldn't possibly do justice to such a phenomenal movie. Why remake it at all?

(Yeah, I liked The Matrix, but c'mon!)

the thing about this film is the message... that humans are walking a dangerous path because of their unchecked animosity. if changes were not made soon then the earth would be doomed. its fascinating because the film was made within the cold war... lord knows there is a lot of unchecked animosity in our present day. i would hope that this new film does not lose that original intent.

Based on the premise of the movie, it sounds like the world could use that message again. So I guess that remake would be timely.

(thinking of the Rocky Horror theme song) hmmmm. Which sounds more catchy?

Michael Rennie was ill 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' but he told us where we stand"

Keanu Reeves was ill 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' but he told us where we stand"

...this is true.

ha! don't get me wrong, i like keanu reeves (neo!) but michael rennie is better suited for the lyric. ;)

Oh' John Carpenters "The Thing" was really well done imo..love it!!

The original was great!.Carpenters version is probably one of the better 'remakes' of any Sci-fi/Horror film to date.(again IMO)

The F/X alone in this film being from what is it?1982? freakin' amazing!!
The same goes for "American Werewolf In London"..amazing transformation F/X!!

well, there is a teaser trailer up on the official website. the trailers are quicktime btw.

http://www.dtessmovie.com/

i have to admit, i like the trailer. i guess we'll see.

Saw the trailer I think before Hancock, started... and went. Are you fucking kidding me?

Seriously looks awful....

I honestly thought it had something to do with the Matrix in the trailer... and then I realised, oh wait this is a shitty remake isn't it?

ha! i was wondering when you'd come along oh joyful one. ;)

i'm still not convinced myself and i suspect that i won't have a full opinion until the closing credits have rolled. obviously i'm interested enough to check it out though.

I'm hearing the remake is dropping that humanity is a threat to the cosmos and Keanu has come to warn us about global warming. If this is true then barf. I loved the original. I have no interest in whatever that movie would be.

I find the lower my expectations are, the better the movie becomes.

well that is logical of course.

I'm picky too. I pay a lot for movies. I hate paying for shit.
I was fooled by too many movies, the Prestige, Van Helsing! Oh Soo many more to name.

oh man, i knew van helsing was going to suck before the credits rolled. sometimes the stink just rolls off the celluloid, ya know?

Seriously though, did you NOT think O GOODIE A MATRIX SEQUEL, and the yoru hopes were dashed the second Aliens were involved? And then raped and soiled the second you found out it was the remake of one of the greatest movies of all time?

well i'm going into this with low expectations as well. i honestly don't think you can improve on one of the best science fiction movies ever made. but i'm willing to go and check it out.

The creators of the upcoming remake of 1951's classic SF movie The Day the Earth Stood Still told SCI FI Wire that the film will feature a new version of Gort, but will remain true to certain elements.

"Gort is very much in the film, and there are Gort encounters, though they're handled differently," star Jennifer Connelly said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego last month.

Director Scott Derrickson added that Gort will appear early in the film, as he did in the original. "Yeah," he said. "Absolutely. No question about it."
