Andre Previn dead at 89.
I understand that the English were dismayed that this Hollywood hack (with his very unseemly private life with Mad Mia Farrow) was allowed to take over the London Symphony Orchestra in 1968.
But he proved his mettle with a series of respectful performances of the great Vaughan-Williams' complete symphonies.
Then he recorded this brilliant 1935 piece by William Walton (which was described as having an orgiastic power, coruscating malice, sensuous desolation and extroverted swagger').
Listen to the bristling energy of the first five minutes—
Of course, modern recording allowed us to hear and comprehend all this massive contrapuntal energy.
And of course, you Americans must realise that a Hollywood hack stole much of William Walton's methods for a movie called 'Star Wars'.
