I read about the bear incident. I have a feeling a lot of these animal shows are staged and kept hush hush....unfortunately.

I'm ok with that. It's never been wise to peek behind the curtain during entertainment. Nature doesn't cooperate with filming schedules. Many people have much broader animal awareness and knowledge thanks to Mutual of Omaha and the plethora of shows that have replaced it.

"Reality TV" existed long before the modern raft of those like Big Brother.

What a shame. I loved The Mod Squad as a kid or early teen.

I as well. I can remember watching it with one of my sisters at maybe age 10ish....

We didn't have any TV growing up and had a small black and white set hidden behind wall space in a small knotty pine closet my Dad built into part of a dormer. And she would let me puff on her Benson & Hedges or Virginia Slims  And after school it was always Wagon Train at 3pm)

Sad news about Doris Day, but then 97 years is quite an achievement.

Sad news about Doris Day, but then 97 years is quite an achievement.

Bigger than what she achieved during the first 47 years of her life? bigger than her last 50 of virtual nothingness?

Doris Day will be missed.

Her career was stronger as a singer when that crossover happened and she became a screen star. Her image was that of a young woman and she wasn't much of a dramatic actress, so her age went against that as she hit her 50's.

That said, she achieved world renown and worked some 30 years or so, and established a signature vocal style that made her a world recognized star.

Her marriages were not as successful, and her third husband brought her down in several ways, including introducing her to Christian Science. He also made horrible decisions that enabled his partner, a lawyer, to lose a fortune so that when Day's husband died, she was in debt. She successfully sued, but it took until 1979 for the settlement to stand and for her to regain a lot of what she lost.

Her husband even signed her up for TV without her assent, but she honored the contract, which is how many people my age came to "know" her from her own show which ran a brief five years.

She was one of the real stars, even if not a diva. And people still love her voice today.

And she did much after her retirement for animals.

Thank you, Mrs. Kappelhoff. Enjoy your rest.
