Dr Mary Fowkes, a New York neuropathologist who discovered the connection between COVID-19 and abnormal clotting, of a heart attack at age 66.

Dr. Mary Fowkes, 66, Dies; Helped Science Understand the Pandemic [NY Times]
She performed autopsies in New York that found blood clots in vital organs, suggesting how much the virus spreads through the body.

Dr. Mary Fowkes, a neuropathologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan whose autopsies of Covid-19 victims early in the pandemic discovered serious damage in multiple organs — a finding that led to the successful use of higher doses of blood thinners to treat patients — died on Nov. 15 at her home in Katonah, N.Y., in Westchester County. She was 66.

Her daughter, Jackie Treatman, said the cause was a heart attack.

When Dr. Fowkes (rhymes with “pokes”) and her team began their autopsies, little was known about the novel coronavirus, which was believed to be largely a respiratory disease. The first few dozen autopsies revealed that Covid-19 affected the lungs and other vital organs, and that the virus probably traveled through the body in the endothelial cells, which line the interior of blood vessels.

Pat Quinn, an disabilities activist, who had A.L.S., was credited with promoting the ice-bucket challenge videos that raised $220 million.

Pat Quinn, Who Promoted A.L.S. Ice Bucket Challenge, Dies at 37 [NY Times]
Pat Quinn, who helped raise $220 million to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or A.L.S., by promoting the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, died on Sunday in Yonkers, N.Y., seven years after he learned he had the disease. He was 37.

His death, at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, was confirmed by the A.L.S. Association and in a post on his official Facebook page.

Mr. Quinn did not create the challenge, in which people dumped buckets of ice water on their heads while pledging to donate money to fight A.L.S. But he and his friend Pete Frates, who also had A.L.S., are credited with amplifying it and helping to make it a sensation in the summer and fall of 2014, raising tens of millions of dollars for research and, perhaps nearly as important, wider awareness of the disease.

Be a musclehead hired to appear as a mascot in a groundbreaking motion picture version of old chivalry fairytales set in hyperspace, you are celebrated as a legitimate actor. Appear as the somewhat business-savvy airhead you basically are in a groundbreaking scripted reality, for over a decade, along with your plague of a family, you will be perpetually branded a good-for-nothing with no legitimate trade.

Pat Patterson, the first openly gay pro wrestling star, has died at 79 [NBC]
Pro wrestling icon Pat Patterson, the industry's first openly gay star and a long-time lieutenant of promoter Vince McMahon, has died, officials said Wednesday.

The WWE Hall of Fame member was 79.

"A true trailblazer of the industry, Patterson was linked to many 'firsts' in sports-entertainment throughout his storied career," World Wrestling Entertainment said in a statement. "In a career spanning six decades, the renaissance man left an indelible mark on the industry in the ring, on the microphone and behind the scenes."..

The teenaged Patterson was thrown out of his home in Montreal after coming out to his parents and did the unthinkable — immigrated to America to make it in the hyper-macho world of pro wrestling, he wrote in his 2016 biography, "Accepted: How the First Gay Superstar Changed WWE."

cute guy and real success story---this whole house fire story is so weird to me---was at his family's home in Connecticut I believe? Dying in a house fire is strange--that he couldn't get out. The stories about this are vague so far.

He was in this room and he couldnt get out . . .
You would think he just goes out the door.

Rumor has it he accidentally passed out from huffing whippets

Tony Hsieh, 46, allegedly enjoyed drinking Grey Goose vodka, inhaling nitrous oxide laughing gas – otherwise known as “whippets” – and lighting candles, causing coworkers to question whether any of those things played a role in the circumstances surrounding the blaze, the Daily Mail reported
