Have you read The Book of Laughter and Forgetting? It may be even better. (In fact, I think all his novels are worthwhile, even The Festival of Insignificance.)
I often think that Western, and especially North American, lefty types* who are too young to remember Communism in Eastern Europe need to read Forgetting and Lightness to see where censorious impulses arising from utopian ideals wind up in practice.
